Welcome to the community Nick!
things like hyperlocal knowledge, like that detour there for 1 Ave SW, help a lot!
Moving on, our local Wiki is a wealth of information, I’d probably start there. https://www.waze.com/wiki/Canada/Main_Page
Just within the last year, a new tool called Suggest an Edit has been rolled out, so even when there are segments locked out, you can still submit a basic change instead of having to submit an unlock request in the forums.

Outside editing suggestions you can add new roads, we are adding alleyways again.

And POIs are a good source of edits too.

You can certainly attend to PURs that are available to your rank. May have to get a few more approvals before you can start tackling them, but that doesn’t take long. I just approved a few of yours today.
Even if a place is locked above, it doesn’t matter - you can still update all the parameters and it will flag higher editors to review/approve the changes (and you’ll get the edit points too)
I often recommend editors seek a commercial plaza and just ensure businesses are added, along with an entry point. Easy edits and does add quite a bit of value to drivers. Schools are a another good one - if they’re not fully mapped in your editing area, can start with that.
In the Place Editing wiki link, there is a user script call WME Place Harmonizer - while we try to encourage new editors to learn the native experience, there are some scripts that just make things easier and better work flow.
Another script (browser addon) is WME Toolbox.
You can also start dealing with user reports in your areas too. Almost all do require a reachout to grab more information (another user script is URC-e for a list of canned responses), but this can help you gauge problem areas and think about how Waze behaves and how we can adjust things to best match reality. May still require help from a higher rank editor, but we’ll then work with you so you understand and can solve further on your own.
And if you’re interested, we do have a community discord you’re welcome to join - does tend to be the platform of choice for engagement and help. But you can also keep to the forums/Waze Chat is you prefer.

@Dry_B0nes is our Local Champ for AB/Prairies, can reach-out to them if you have any questions too.
