On-and-off routing Katy freeway/I-10

Here’s a livemap permalink of the approximate route from Katy Texas to an airport hotel in Houston:
https://www.waze.com/livemap?lon=-95.34239&lat=29.98659&zoom=17&from_lat=29.78579&from_lon=-95.8244&to_lat=29.98659&to_lon=-95.34239

Directions look like this:

  • US-90
  • After 1.07 miles, turn left
    Katy Fwy
  • After 249.34 feet, keep left
    to I-10 E
  • After 9.22 miles, keep left
    to Katy Tollway
  • After 2.87 miles, keep right
    to I-10 E

Before finally getting on the Sam Houston. Does that seem like a reasonable or unreasonable thing to be dong on that stretch of highway?

I’ve never driven there.

The UR says
“why exit highway?” and specifies a route of “Katy to hobby airport”

Greetings.

I’m just getting started on reading forums (I’ve been so busy actually handling the map that I haven’t had time to find out who’s-who and what all is in here and you happen to be the first up in the Texas list. It looks like there are a lot who post here that I never see editing and vice-versa) and I noticed this post and decided to help.

Taking a look at the route you planned, it’s perfectly fine to get from No Label Brewery in Katy to Terminal A at Houston Intercontinental Airport (Bush/IAH). It takes the driver onto I-10, then onto the HOV/toll lanes on I-10, tells the driver to get out of the toll lanes and back into main lanes, etc. Pretty straight-forward if you know the area or edit here often.

I then took a look at the UR you listed. The reporter asked about from Katy to William Hobby Houston Airport (HOU) on the south side of town. https://www.waze.com/livemap?lon=-95.34239&lat=29.98659&zoom=17&from_lat=29.78579&from_lon=-95.8244&to_lat=29.98659&to_lon=-95.34239 The driving directions are almost exactly the same from the starting point and depending on the time of day it may be advantageous to exit the toll lanes or highway to take another route. Knowing the driver’s time of day is important to answer the question.

So, you did the right thing to ask about the UR for an area that you’ve never been in and don’t know the locations involved. Do you want me to help by contributing to the UR?

I hope this helps. I’m going to go attend to a server and then back to fixing problems caused by outside editors who tried to “help” during the last map raid here.

Yes please. I was even looking at the wrong airport.
Usually, when I see a UR worded like that, it takes analysis but not much local knowledge to solve.
I can’t see how I add value to this one.

If you look at my response you’ll figure it out (based on what I’ve given you to start with and what I added to the user.)

If the user doesn’t reply in 7 days then we can close it as Not Identified and move on. Many like this are based on not knowing the area and options. I-10 have the same options, 290, and parts of I-45. The biggie is knowing the local landmarks. If you are from outside and don’t know them, research them first before jumping in. If in question ask for addresses or specific locations used as start/destinations. It’s a big reason why I don’t meddle with URs outside of my driving area. I’ll modify roads/turns/etc because those can be more easily verified and set, but URs require more local finesse.

Thanks. Usually, I avoid URs in Texas. I was too intrigued by this one because I’ve begun to study detour prevention. Once I studied it, I realized it might not be that at all.

Thanks for following up on this one. I learned one or two things.
