I’d like views on whether parish boundaries apply the the town/village name chosen in the street details or if there is another source we recognise instead.
For context, see this map comment about streets being incorrectly assigned to Histon and Impington near Cambridge.
The city names don’t affect anything within the App / routing, as far as I am aware they are only there so users can more easily identify the correct destination. Boundaries can change without notice due to local authorities altering things so we generally map segments based on the village entry signs but in this case that is unhelpful.
The OS Musical Chairs is a good check as it lists the settlement for each road.
I see Yellow_Berdie has been busy mapping every car park lane & footpaths linking them
City names are important to Detour Prevention. A chain of segments with the same street name but different city name will not appear as a continuous road for DP purposes. I know that’s not the issue here, but it is one example of how city names matter.
City names also have an impact on search. God knows how many "High Street"s there are in the UK, but having a city name on them makes them easier to find.
Traffic Reports in the app use the city name. “Accident on the A14” is pretty useless. “Accident on the A406 near Impington” is far more informative.
The app sometimes uses the city name in TTS.
Now on the main question about boundaries. Run away! Close your account and throw away your phone. You do not want to get involved in this!
Seriously, it’s a nightmare. There are no official boundaries that can be used in all situations. I suggest you read this post that I made a few years back. It gets referred to often enough that I keep it bookmarked.
Yes, but none of the values from OpenData (which is where that comes from) are applicable in all situations.
Looking at the specific case, if that parish boundary is accurate, then I would find it acceptable to separate Impington from Histon. BUT the city name in Waze should not be on segments outside the built-up area.
Assuming you can get the guy to tidy up the over-enthiastic work he’s done and “drag” the boundaries of Impington back a bit, I don’t see any reason not to make the change on these segments. These segments look to be the boundary. If so, you can take your choice. Either name would be correct and also wrong! No city name would, at least, be uncontroversial.
