As some of you may already know staff completed a database import for the USA Wazeopedia on July 19th, 2016. We are still in the testing phase, but we can start manipulating the pages and editing where necessary to prepare for the full launch. This Wazeopedia is specific to our country, and somewhat isolated so we can have our own environment to some degree. It will eventually completely replace the existing wiki.
How can you help?
Currently there are 3 major tasks to get this project moving. A lot of work has already been done by our Wiki Masters, but there is still a lot more to do.
We need to test the environment, this means poking around, opening pages, and looking for anything out of place or strange which is acting right, and then reporting those to the wiki devs. If you notice anything not working properly please report it so we can pass it up the chain.
We originally started making a list of all pages relevant to the USA community for the transfer package, but soon realized it would be a smaller list for the pages we didn’t need. To that effect we have asked for and received a complete database (all wiki pages) transfer in the USA Wazeopedia. We now need to go through the pages and remove any pages which belonged to other countries, or Global pages which we already have a USA version of, and are no longer to the USA community. This can be done by editing any such page you find and adding the following to the top of the page.
{{Delete page|reason=foreign}}
During this time between when the import happened, and when the Wazeopedia goes live we need to track any edits to the USA pages and make sure to mirror them in the respective Wazeopedia pages so we can be ready to go at launch time.
This fourth step is not needed to be completed right now, but eventually we will want to rename some pages to remove redundancy. Essentially any pages which have /USA in the name will need to be moved to a new name without the /USA in it. I would avoid moving any of the state template pages though since that can very easily break the template.
Please feel free to help out and join this effort. If you have questions please feel free to ask your local Wiki Master.
So let’s say for example I wanted to get rid of the Detour Prevention Page - I put in the {{Delete page|reason=foreign}} into the top should I also put in a wiki link to the appropriate page? Or should I assume that you will just know where to find the appropriate page?
Important note - Please make sure you are editing the source and not the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) format.
Edit - Also - Is the Wazeopedia also to include the American Territories (American Samoa, Puerto Rico, etc.) pages?
The detour prevention page is a global page, not a foreign page, so the process should be slightly different. The process for updating global pages will in most cases be to move the USA page to replace the global instead of a simple deletion. instead of marking these for deletion, they should marked for a merge, I can make a simple template which you can put on the page to mark it to be merged, and a place to put the link to the USA page. I’ll update here once the template is up.
Yes we should include all the American Territories in our wiki.
And yes if you will just paste the code you should be in the “edit source” mode. or it is also possible to add a template in WYSIWYG mode, and then add a field for reason, with the detail.
You can now use the {{Merge global}} template to mark global pages which need to be merged with their respective UAS pages. To use this on a global page add the following code to the top of the page. Edit source
{{Merge global|<PAGENAME for USA version of the page>}}
WYSIWYG
I’ve also built in template data to make it easy to add the templates using the WYSIWYG editor.
At the top of page click to Insert a template.
Then choose the Merge global (or delete page) template.
Then fill in the PAGENAME for the usa version of the page in the <PAGENAME> field.
And finally add the template to the page by clicking insert in the top right corner.
To help with step #3 I put together a list of all wiki pages updated since the USA Wazeopedia import.
I already marked off any foreign pages in the list, and any User pages. the remaining edits need to be synced to the Wazeopedia. Any one who would like to help keeping the two in sync please request edit access to the sheet. After updating the Wazeopedia version of a page, mark the status in the sheet. I can update this sheet once a week or so until the full launch of Wazeopedia.
Update: for step 3: we have completed syncing all wiki edits up to 8/7/16, there are now 37 new changes to sync.
Step 2: I skimmed through all the pages, and marked many for deletion based on their names. KTCAOP has been marking orphaned pages and the like. We now have 2,397 pages listed for deletion in the sheet, (most of these are not marked in the wazeopedia itself).
I’ve got our wazeopedia fully synced (except user pages) to the old wiki. We’ve deleted about 3k foreign or irrelevant pages so far.
I’ve updated the sidebar to replace the list of countries with state territories and regions. We should all start migrating to wazeopedia and working on cleaning it up.
Special thanks to KTCAOP for helping out with this task, but we really could use a lot more help.
Thanks for offering, there are still several aspects that need refining. KTCAOP and myself did a pretty good job so far purging the foreign pages, however there still a few which linger (especially user pages which I have not tackled at all). You could look around and if mark any foreign pages as such using the {{Delete page|foreign}} template above. You could also seek out users you know to be foreign and mark all their pages for deletion.
We have started marking the global pages to merged with their USA counterparts. Depending on where your skill set lies you may want to help with this task. Basically this entails looking at any global page not already marked for merge, and checking if there is any other page with the USA specific information on that topic. Then adding the {{Merge global}} template, and if available including the link to the page with the USA content. The {{Merge global}} template should be added to the USA page pointing back to the global page as well. This will make it much easier later on to list these pages and start the detailed process of splicing these pages together.
You may be more inclined to test links and such, being that the Wazeopedia is still in beta simply poking around, jumping links from page t page, etc. may uncover bugs which have not yet been discovered, and missing pages/files. If you find any bugs (pages not looking, or behaving as they should) please let me know, so I can post them, and notify the devs. You could also search for missing files, most of the time these files have been uploaded to the old wiki after the transfer happened (July 19th, 2016), and have yet been uploaded to the Wazeopedia, you could use the bookmarklet I made to easily find these files in the old wiki, download them, and then upload them to the Wazeopedia using the same filename.
I also have been running a report (~daily) to track any changes to the legacy wiki, and copy them to the Wazeopedia keeping the two synchronized. If you are interested in helping with this task, request permission to edit the sheet, and I can show you the process. Basically it entails running the report, then checking to make sure there are no conflicting edits in the Wazeopedia page during the timespan of the report, copying the wiki page to the Wazeopedia page, check the changes for conflicts or errors, and saving. This has to be done for each page changed in the wiki.
I’m sure there are other things you can do to help to, but these are the ones on thop of my head right now.
Prep update: We’ve been doing well keeping the Wazeopedia synced up, and now have to focus on marking pages which need to be de-globalized using the {{merge global}} template, and looking for any broken links, missing images, etc…
I also removed all the translation pages, and translation tags from USA base pages, from all pages except the Translation Sandbox page, and the User pages for Orbitc and Voludu. (the rest were foreign based pages or translations.
I know we are getting closer to launch, but I only recently started editing with any regularity. Is there still work to be done on the USA Wazeopedia that I could help with? Happy to pitch in with whatever, whether they are edits to the text or to the underlying code. I’m handy with both!
Absolutely. There is still a lot of cleanup to be done (and even more once the switch is complete).
Currently the biggest project is keeping the old wiki and new wazeopedia synchronized. I have developed a script to aid in the process but it still requires manual oversight to prevent accidentally overwriting changes which were made only in the wazeopedia, and conflict with the version in the old wiki. You can find information about projects that need to be worked on above in this thread. If you want to work on the sync process request permission to edit the sheet, and I can show you how to do it. I have fallen behind, and about a month out of sync currently.
FYI in case anyone missed it, this morning was the official Wazeopedia launch. The USA wiki team was hard at work the past two days making sure all our pages in Wazeopedia were synchronized with any recent changes in the wiki. We are now putting redirects in to the wiki that will automatically bounce anyone who reaches a USA legacy wiki page to the corresponding page in the USA Wazeopedia.
You can help by going to your state and region pages pages, clicking edit, and then as soon as it loads click save.
You can put the {{USRedirect}} template on the top of all USA pages in the legacy wiki to redirect them to their Wazepedia counterpart. Check out the template page for special options like redirecting to a different pagename.
I want to thank the wiki team that helped make this transition so smooth for us.
P.S. Anyone that has content in their user pages, which has been updated since Jul 2016, should copy those change over to Your user space in Wazeopedia. If you have a lot of pages, or need help doing this please reach out to myself or one of the our local wiki masters for assistance.
