Primary Street Classification

From reading the wiki it says that all numbered county routes should be shown as Primary Streets.

CBenson’s post

also seems to indicate this but from what I can see in the map this doesn’t seem to be the actual practice. To be clear I’m referring more to rural roadways rather than urban roadways. I’ve read through the posts here and just don’t see a definitive direction. I just want to get it right from the start and any and all guidance appreciated!

Thank you.

Good question. I do find verifying road type in West Virginia to be tedious. Currently, what I have been doing is:
Verifying freeway type for all interstates and other controlled access highways.
Verifying major highway type for all signed US Highways and other primary arterials (OPAs) listed here: http://gis.wvdot.com/gti/GISTemplates/HPMS_Reports/WV_FA_Roads_2014.pdf
Verifying minor highway type for all signed WV Highways and minor arterials.
That’s as far as I’ve gotten, so I haven’t done much to figure out when to upgrade a road to primary street type.
However, if I come across primary street that either is signed a primary county route without a slash number or that is listed as a collector, I leave it as a primary street.

Currently working on getting a good FC map to use in statewide in WV. Once I have the FC map working this will be a lot easier.

Personally I completely agree with all the above and have been approaching same way until we get a good interactive FC map (in the works). Most especially agree with setting only “county route without a slash number…” as primary street. All others (I’ve seen several CR-##/# that were not much more than a driveway) should be street for now.

Thanks for the excellent replies. What I’ve noticed is that the CR designated roads are named and that you have to check the individual WVDOT highway maps to see the actual CR number (and those maps seem NOT to include the names) and then hope the alternative name is included in the field when editing.

From a local perspective the CR numbers are rarely, if ever used here. The road names go back to the 1800’s or beyond and that’s all they are ever referred to. The State Roads (WV-XX) are exactly the opposite. When they have names they are rarely called by them and the number is used instead.

I looked at the FC map linked in the wiki and it does leave a great deal to be desired.

Thanks again for the help!

I saw this tonight and thought I’d share. You have to love the WV DOT or whoever’s in charge of road classification in Marshall County. I’ll have to stop in and ask who that is. :stuck_out_tongue:

Wayne’s Ridge Road is also CR-78. Which should be a primary street assuming everything is equal. Which is certainly isn’t…at least not in West Virginia. Unimproved road? Oh yeah.

Check out the street view.
