Queensbury, NY routing issues to/from I-87

I drive between Burlington, VT(BTV) and Philly(PHL) on a regular basis. All of my other GPS apps and devices route me on VT-22A, rather than taking state highways waze sends me 60 miles east for interstate only route via 89/91/84/95. Routing should be VT-7S in BTV to VT22A in Vergennes, to VT-4/NY-4 in Fair Haven VT, to NY-149 in Fort Anne, NY to NY-9 in Queensbury, NY to 87S, to NYC, etc.

Waze seems to refuse to route through Queensbury, and if it does, it will route me North on 9 to Exit 21 on 87 from 149, or will route me south on 9 for 1/3 mile to 87N to do a uturn at exit 21 rather than going an additional 1/3 mile to the 87S interchange.

On the northbound route, waze will not use exit 20 to take the reverse of above paragraph and instead routes me to either exit 26, or exit 31 off of 87N. Thankfully as soon as I take exit 20, it routes along my favorite route listed above.

I have clicked every road segment between my home and 5 miles south of Queensbury along 87 and cannot find the map problem to fix the routing. Is there something I cannot see?

Please post permalink from start and the end (not your exact address) points for us to look for issues.
Thanks

from 87N https://www.waze.com/livemap?zoom=&lat=43.34419&lon=-73.69153
to nearby this area in Williston, Vt https://www.waze.com/livemap?zoom=&lat=44.44469&lon=-73.11049

and vice versa.

my optimized path north is 87n to exit 20, ny9n to ny149e to ny4e to vt22a-n to vt7n to 89
reverse is 89 to vt7s to vt22a-s to ny4w to ny149w to ny9s to 87s via exit 20

If it is doing what I think it is doing, it is not even considering those routes and is keeping you on the thruway. After the route gets so long it stops looking for routes other than interstates.

With Philly being the start point, Waze is only giving one route

With a start point a little north of Albany, you get 3 different routes.
https://www.waze.com/livemap?zoom=17&lat=42.82471&lon=-73.76856&from_lat=42.82471&from_lon=-73.76856&to_lat=44.44474&to_lon=-73.11118

Next time you are driving, when you get to say Albany or something, try picking your destination again, or use the “routes” button to see if 3 different routes pop up.

This should get fixed as Functional Classification mapping is added to those roads. The state highways will be mapped as Major Highways, and for long distance routes, Waze will typically look to Freeways and Major Highways for everything except the very beginning and very end of the trip.

If the state highways are currently classed lower, then they will not be considered. Even if they are classed properly, if there is some connection needed between parts of the route that require a minor highway or a street – even one segment long – it may not get considered.

So you are correct, and this reqires an “upgrade” to some sections of your route.

To qwaletee’s point there are many arterial roads all over upstate NY that have not yet been identified, especially primary ones that are not federal routes and secondary arterial roads that are not state routes. We’re working on it, but our current priorities are in the more-urban New York City area. That being said, we would definitely invite anyone familiar with the more upstate regions of NY who is interested in helping out to either grab a county and go if you have sufficient rank, or if not, then contact orbitc, qwaletee, or me for more information on how you can help out.

I updated the roads in Queensbury over the past month such that the road types should all comply with functional class etc in the manner described by the Wiki. In Queensbury that includes US-9 and SR-149 now being major highways instead of minor highways. I’m only a level 2 but most roads were not locked. I don’t think this solves the reported problem, but I wanted someone to know I’m doing my part to help (hopefully).

Thanks for your contributions. If you’re regularly editing in NY please add your to the appropriate editors table at the bottom of the ny wiki page.

If you are working on FC in an area, please let us know by adding your name and changing the status of the county in the FC project table.
