Red Light Cameras in Delaware

There was an article today about how (not) wonderful red light cameras are in Delaware in the News Journal:
http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20130728/NEWS15/307280050/Red-light-cameras-rake-green?sf15472000=1

Of particular note was links to the City of Wilmington and DelDot’s pages that list exactly what intersections have cameras:
http://www.wilmingtonde.gov/government/redlightcameras
http://deldot.gov/information/red_light/
These might be useful for people to check against in the fight against camera report spam when you get one that looks like it might actually be legit. (as opposed to the ones I keep cleaning up in people’s driveways or the middle of I-95… )

Something else to discuss, I’m not 100% sure on this, but I believe at least the DelDot ones only check a single direction though the intersection, which is usually noted by the “Red Light Photo Enforced” signs, and are the ones that you’re driving under the overhead mounted cameras. So for Example
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.75158&lat=39.65849&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
This one only checks Northbound traffic.
It appears someone has come to the same conclusion, as the one at 896 and 40 I was originally going to use as my example has been cleaned up:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.74087&lat=39.60567&zoom=7&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
(Thanks!)

I have no idea about how the Wimington ones are setup or how inclusive their photography is, as my only experience with that city if I can help it is to go through on 95 as quickly as possible.

Does everyone else agree with my assessment of how the Deldot ones issue citations, and should I start listing out other ones that need updating to reflect the single direction with my knowledge of which one they are?

We should have a stickied topic with all confirmed red light cameras, cross referenced with the DOT’s website.

I started cleaning up the US-40/DE-896 intersections based on the actual signage in the area. You are correct–the red light camera is only enforced on one particular direction for a given intersection. It’s all based on the signage–and it will (somewhat) obvious based on the orientation of the camera(s) in the intersection itself.

I can’t speak to the Wilmington ones–I drive through there on occasion, but never really paid too much attention to the specific intersections the red light cameras are situated.

I’ve made a mental note to check each red light camera intersection when I come across them and clean them up in the editor accordingly. I find that users are reporting lots of red light cameras because they assume the sensor (that looks like a camera) mounted on the traffic light pole is a red light camera, when it in fact is not.

Here’s a few for you, then:

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.71502&lat=39.60817&zoom=7&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
Northbound is the direction checked.

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.75139&lat=39.65845&zoom=7&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
Northbound is also the direction checked here.

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.7749&lat=39.66531&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFTT&cameras=657303
Elkton Rd heading SouthWest is the direction checked here.

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.72592&lat=39.66273&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
Chestnut Hill Rd heading West is checked.

Others are outside my regular travel areas, or my memory is fuzzy, but I’ll pay attention going forward. (Old Baltimore Pike and Salem Church isn’t even on our map at this point, so if it shows up, don’t just auto-delete it)

Alrighty, I took care of those and drive by a couple to make sure. I’ll keep an eye out for the Old Baltimore Pike/Salem Church crossing and if I drive through there, I’ll be sure to report the camera to add it to the map.

Update here when you see anything or update anything! Thanks!

Managed to get out and run some errands outside my normal area yesterday, so here’s some updates:
Churchmans Road
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.6517&lat=39.68847&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT&cameras=602404
Westbound is the correct answer.

273 and Harmony Road:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.67971&lat=39.67563&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFTT
Camera that should be there is the one coming off of Harmony Rd, but someone deleted all the cameras at this intersection.

I also notice that all the cameras that were on this intersection were deleted as well:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.6539&lat=39.65937&zoom=5&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT

Edit:
More driving done today for appointments, took the scenic route.
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.6563&lat=39.72335&zoom=5&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFTT
Limestone Rd checked in both directions.

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.69979&lat=39.70093&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
Camera checks going Westbound.

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.70885&lat=39.69794&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFT
both directions of Capitol Trail and coming from the south off of Red Mill Road.
Also, the cameras are all positioned awkwardly, not pointing at the intersection.

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.62976&lat=39.73633&zoom=6&layers=BFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFTT
Newport Gap Pike in both directions is checked.

OK I went through and updated, let me know if I missed anything.

If there any cameras you need me to lock, please let me know. Thanks

I haven’t noticed a problem of people deleting any valid cameras anymore luckily, but I have seen people approving non-existent ones, which I delete as I catch them. I’ll PM you a list of cameras that are definitely right and should be locked at the highest level so they aren’t mistakenly deleted.

Thanks.

Just a reminder bump on this topic. I think it’s really important to keep on top of these, especially with the large number of them in the city of Wilmington.

Can someone who is familiar with the locations take a look at all the unapproved cameras throughout Wilmington? I’m afraid I’ll delete one that should be approved.

Good idea. I approved one recently on 4th street at Orange that’s been there for about a decade. I was surprised it wasn’t on the map, so there’s probably a lot more.

OK, I just took a quick look at the map. Yes, there’s loads that aren’t on it. I know there’s quite a few along Lancaster Avenue and Fourth Street. Not exactly sure the cross streets.

OK I’ll make this my project to go through the pending cameras and approve or delete them. Hopefully it won’t require a road trip to confirm some of them…

I don’t do much driving within the city of Wilmington, but I can if you need me to check any of them. I’m certainly closer than Luray!

I’m in northern Delaware every other week but usually only venture into downtown Wilmington about twice a month normally. I used to work downtown though, so am pretty familiar with it.

OK I did some cleanup and approved about 5 cameras. I also noticed a few places that I know about that need them that don’t even have an unapproved cam in place. Like here…

https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lon=-75.57415&lat=39.74341&layers=1989&zoom=4&segments=9249807

So at some point unless someone marks them I’ll need to drive around and report them.

Deldot gives the complete list: http://www.deldot.gov/information/red_light/

The interesting thing is that it only lists 1 intersection on Naamans road (Shipley/Brandywine)
But its accompanying map at http://www.deldot.gov/traffic/map.ejs?tab=RLE also shows one a Naamans/202.

Useful. Doesn’t include city of Wilmington though. :frowning:

see above for city of wilmington.

I have update the wiki at https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Delaware#Red_Light_Cameras with a note about the Naamans/202 camera.

The following red light cameras inside Wilmington still need to be reported and approved. Waiting for someone to report them else I’ll go report them at some point. All the others have been reported and approved. (ps, I ain’t reporting the one on 30th Street on location. I’ll drag a reported one from Luray 20 feet at a time if I have to before I go to that location…)

p.s. Thanks to voludu2 for finding that website with the cameras listed and to MReiser4670 for bumping this topic. Very helpful. I have approved about 10 of them through this process so far, so this has been worthwhile.

Finally got all the Wilmington cameras on that list placed correctly.
