Red Light Cameras

I just wanted to clarify what everyone thought about marking the old style ‘wet-film’ red light cameras as ‘fake cameras’ in waze. As far as I can tell, the RTA is not enforcing these anymore as they have started rolling out the new digital kind of cameras. None of these old style cameras are listed on the RTA’s list: http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/downloads/current_speed_camera_locations.pdf yet the RMS claims to be very transparent and display the location of all cameras on their website. I note that the RMS has said previously that “these cameras were
becoming outdated and used obsolete technology” http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/downloads/red_light_speed_safety_review.pdf. Would they really be maintaining something that’s obsolete? So the big question is, do these cameras still enforce? The old cameras require a technician to physically collect the film (unlike the new digital networked system) - I have never seen these being maintained over the past few years at the many I’ve driven past - I’ve never heard someone receive a ticket from one in the past few years either.

The ones i’m talking about are the ones that have a small white sign saying ‘RED LIGHT CAMERA AHEAD’ (eg: https://www.google.com/maps/@-33.771762,151.088308,3a,75y,309.61h,78.33t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sarCY4Jjc72o00sxEutjuaA!2e0 ) - note they’re different from the new ones that say ‘RED LIGHT SPEED CAMERA AHEAD’ (eg: https://www.google.com/maps/@-33.79157,151.130169,3a,39.4y,323.99h,90.07t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s_JoIJIzeNXOBbhRMetEToQ!2e0).

Does anyone know anything more about these, and what are the thoughts on marking them ‘fake’? I didn’t want to go changing lots of them, without seeing what everyone thinks first.

Plus these speed cameras that have been turned off should definitely be marked as ‘fake’: http://www.caradvice.com.au/130070/nsw-government-switches-off-38-speed-cameras/

Allo

Initially, I was in two minds about marking them as fake.

I can understand removing them if they are no longer used but at the same time they could be replaced with digital kit and then we have a lag time on the RMS updating their list. Of course, we would hope that Wazers would report such changes as soon as they became aware of them to close the gap.

Upon reflection, I would probably err on the side of caution and leave them be unless they physically disappear - better to warn of a potential camera than to provide zero warning at all. We could potentially have Wazers adding them back in without knowing the current state of wet film vs digital cameras in NSW.
