Routing and Speed Issue – Burchetts Green Village (Berkshire)

Hi everyone,

I’m from the Burchetts Green Village Association in Berkshire.

We’re working to address a significant increase in through-traffic and speeding along Burchetts Green Road and Burchetts Green Lane, both Category C roads with a 20 mph limit and a 7-tonne restriction.

Despite these limits, our Neighbourhood Speed Watch data shows average speeds well above 20 mph, with over 5,500 vehicles per day using the route as a shortcut between the A404 and A4.

The situation is made worse by the presence of Burchetts Green CE Infant School in the centre of the village, which already contributes to daily congestion and pedestrian safety concerns during drop-off and pick-up times.

We’d really appreciate guidance or support from local Area Managers / senior editors on:
• Ensuring the 20 mph and 7-tonne restrictions are reflected correctly in Waze.
• Exploring options to discourage non-local commuter and HGV routing through the village.

I’m happy to share our Speed Watch data, photos and further background information if helpful.

Many thanks for your time and any help you can offer.

Hi,

The 20mph speed limit is reflected in Waze and has been since at least 2016. The application does not support weight restrictions as it is an app for regular sized vehicles, motorbikes, and taxis. If there is an issue with speeding or traffic congestion, it would be up to the local council to implement further restrictions, speed cameras, traffic calming measures, etc. rather than Waze.

The app is designed to give drivers the best route at a given time of day which may mean routing through the village despite the 20mph limit if it is faster than going around. With that said, the app already does prefer using main roads which are designed to support higher levels of traffic, but will divert if lower classification roads pose a significant benefit time-wise.
