Speed Cameras & Red Light Cameras - Only detecting one direction

Would it be possible have all Speed Cameras & Red Light Cameras alert in both directions? I drive past a tone each day and it only alerts (when you pass the speed limit) in the direction that the camera is pointing. Most (if not all) of these cameras now detect both directions and are speed camera.

PS. I tried updating them on my own (red light to speed cameras) but do not have permission.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

Apologies in advance if this was covered previously.

Am I correct in saying that Red Light / Speed Camera Alert Sound will activate (notification) occurs when we travel above the speed limit of road or of the camera?

When I say camera, I think (correct me if I’m wrong) whoever adds the camera into that location has the ability to input the speed limit onto that camera?

The reason why Im asking is because I getting alerts for some, and not for others.

Thanks

Hi

Thanks for your two posts which have been combined into 1.

In Australia we document our mapping methodology in our publiclay accessible wiki https://www.waze.com//wiki/Australia/Main_Page

The specific page for cameras is https://www.waze.com/wiki/Australia/Cameras

Cameras with the speed value populated will only provide an audio warning if the wazer is exceeding that value. Regardless of camera type it should always be visible as an incon on the waze map (care sometimes AA or ACP can experience issues). Please rember that within the waze App - Alerts and Reports > Reports there are options that need to be checked to make sure have selected Show on Map and Alert while driving. I belive they are checked by default but always something good to check.

I hope this assists both your questions.

Hi Scoota,

Thanks for the link to the camera wiki. Just wanted to confirm if Waze will change the “shutter direction” of the camera to bi-directional at some stage?

They are certainly active going the other way…

You are most welcome. If there is a second fixed speed or red light camera installation that is monitoring the opposite direction of travel then that is handled by adding a second camera facing in that direction. Please provide a permalink a site or location where this is the case and I can have a closer look for you.

excuse my noob question…but do you mind sharing me the link to the live map that shows the cameras? I swear I had it earlier but closed off the tab…

Hi this the link to live map is on the waze home page https://www.waze.com/waze

Im sorry I dont have the link you previously had open in your browser tab.

Do you recall the cross street intersection and suburb?

Is there an option to enable cameras on map (link)? I swear I had that option hahaha

Here are some examples:

  1. Corner of Burke Road and Whitehorse Rd - Deepdene
  2. Corner Seymour Gr and Camberwell Rd - Camberwell

Just so you know fixed cameras will only take photos in the direction they’re facing. They do not take photos of the traffic going in the opposite direction. There has to be cameras on both sides of the road for it to be both ways.

Oh really? I swear I saw the camera in camberwell flash when a car in the opposite direction ran through the red light, either that or I was daydreaming.

Hi here are the two locations - they both look correct based on Street Viewkew.png

All 3 are configured as Red LIght Cameras - nothing incorrect with their configuration or placement

Yeah chances are that someone on your side stopped over the line a bit (in the pedestrian crossing area), so the camera would flash them thinking they went through a red light when they didn’t. They have people in the background that check the footage/photos before you recieve a fine.

Just did some research. some fixed speed cameras are bi-directional, especially the new ones. People have reported this in other NSW and VIC forums. These new cameras are also red light cameras.

With regard to camera’s taking pictures both directions, my observation recently found that you do need both cameras each side to take both direction.

Take the camera at corner of Ferntree Gully Road and Stephensons Road (Mt Waverley) as an example, that camera only took one side which is the east-bound traffic not the west-bound traffic.

You can also make the determination by looking at the asphalt whether or not they have the induction loop markings.
