Although now that all the roads that were previously labeled SHxx have been renamed to State Hwy XX, we would have to either change them back (and ignore the TTS issues) or have a pattern for that as well.
The wikipeida page I mentioned in that post also covered ‘Routes’ such as Route 70, I’ve seen some here in Taranaki but they are pretty rare.
Personally, I think we should name the roads the same as NZTA does (SHxx) and ask Waze to fix the TTS issue of ‘SSSHHHH X’, and since they are so uncommon ignore the routes.

I agree with the stated preferences. Using SHx would be much better and happy to work on updating the map accordingly. There’s a few ‘Urban Routes’ around Auckland that are numbered as well so it’d be good to include those in the shields. I guess the same format is used around the country. Does anyone know what the official name is for those?

But do we care?
Avoid locking restrictions, there are still a lot of areas unmapped and locking a road will make people turn away from adding it (rather than contact someone to unlock it). OR if its a MUST since Waze doesn’t automatically update the levels (I was sitting on level 1 until just recently and contacted them) then make it level 2 or higher rather than per type, anyone with that level should know what they are doing with any road.
The Road Type section around using the no city tick box contradicts http://www.waze.com/wiki/?title=New_Zealand/CityLabelNZ which has been discussed here in the past. Really only the motorways should have No City ticked.
The 3rd point on Dual Carriageways ‘It is split by physical barrier (Concrete, Armco, pedestrian barrier etc)’ goes against the general Waze guidelines ( http://www.waze.com/wiki/?title=When_(Not)_to_Split_a_Two-Way_Road ), and there are a lot of roads in NZ that are split by a barrier with turning areas which are currently not split. I think just the two should be enough, OR extend it to be where access to the other lane may be required and there is no suitable turning area to turn in for at least 1 km.
I believe these are the ‘Routes’ I was mentioning, I dont know of anyone who knows the roads by its route number, and many of them go via normal streets, but if theres enough interest and we can find where they all are then we could add them.
I actually agree with you but I have spent a significant amount of time in Australia and they have beaten me in to submission.
This NZ draft is a toned down version of the Aussie howto.
If you want we can go into more detail on “locking” and the reasoning for it.
I my opinion is going to happen at some stage its just when. (I understand that’s how Google maps work)

The Google purchase has changed everything.
Street level search is now going to be handled by Google. So we no longer need the Alt street name etc.

I agree with everything stated here previously re SH numbering, but think we shouldn’t worry about the local routes, does anybody use them?
A couple of questions tho:
- Does the TTS read out the text used for road shields? If so, we need a TTS fix (as stated).
- Should we encase the road shield text in brackets (or other similar punctuation) for easy identification in the editor?
And finally, we need to make sure our setup allows for the A, B, etc that SH1 and a couple of others have. I guess something like SHxxY. We’ll also probably need to provide samples of signage for these as well (alas, it looks like there’s 2 styles, probably split into single / double digit formats).

I read that thread to mean we’ll have TTS say “Turn x onto shhhwon” for SH1, etc.
You are correct, that is the current situation.
My understanding is once road sheilds are activated then TTS will ignore the first part.
It’s one reason I still waiting for other country’s to get it first.
But I guess we can still get a plan in place
