I think we need a list submitted. I’ve added our state/territory abbreviations to the page (since these also need to be fixed in TTS), removed a few abbreviations that aren’t, and done a bit of other clean up.
Thanks for posting the NZ list - although I did notice that some of the abbreviations on there seem to be different to what is used in Australia (e.g. Boulevard - Bvd seems to be preferred in Australia but Blvd in NZ, although I personally prefer the NZ choice on that one; Court - Ct in Aus but Crt in NZ).
Has our list of abbreviations been submitted? Does anyone know if it’s working?
We’ve had a long-standing issue where certain common street types (particularly “Circuit”) didn’t work abbreviated. If they’re now working, it would be nice to update know these can now be shortened (and don’t have to be lengthened on sight).
Crescent is different for each country per AS/NZS 4819:2001 as well. IP Australia agrees with the NZ abbreviation of Cres. All of our Crescents are labelled as Cres, not Cr.
Personally I’m easy either way, the country managers need to settle on one or the other and let us know what to use.
As ispyisail noted, IP Australia and AS/NZS 4819 are different. In principle, I would consider AS/NZS 4819 to be authoritative. The IP Australia list isn’t - it was only published as “please use these for working with us”, not “please use these because they are standard”. The problem has been that, until now (thanks for pushing this ispyisail) we haven’t had a copy of the AS/NZS to refer to.
The interesting thing is that there are differences between AS4819 and Australia Post’s addressing guidelines, most notably on the preferred abbreviations for Crescent (Cr in AS4819, Cres in Australia Post; NZS4819 also uses Cres) and Avenue (Av in AS4918, Ave in Australia Post, NZS4819 also uses Ave).
That came from the IP Australia site - another reason I was a bit suspect about the IP Australia list, and only included it in the wiki in the absence of a better reference source. I don’t like Shwy, and don’t recall ever seeing it anywhere, whether as a driver, a wazer, or a wrangler of addressing data. I’ll update the wiki page shortly with this and some others.
No. Firstly because it will be decades (if ever) before all signs are fixed, and secondly because the same street - even short ones - can have different abbreviations on different signs (e.g. Av vs Ave). In fact on one of my local streets I discovered the sign at one end had Rd, but the sign at the other end had St.
Please don’t go there, that’s only going to add mayhem to confusion. :o
I’ve updated the list of abbreviations to add sourcing information. As I was doing it, two new thoughts occurred to me:
The IP Australia list, which many of our listed items came from, contains a lot of items that might have been intended for addressing mail to places that are located somewhere other than a property on a street (e.g. on a wharf, on a hill, on a river).
The IP Australia list may also have included items intended for overseas addressees rather than Australian ones, hence the presence of items that might be more common elsewhere than here (Rotary and Turnpike come to mind).
It’s only a hypothesis. But on the basis of it and some other thinking, I’d propose that we remove all of the following items/abbreviations from our list for Waze AU, on the premise that they’re not needed/useful for road navigation here. (Note, this list is not the same as the IP Aus list; there are some I propose retaining such as Expressway, Corner, Little, Mount and Heights as they may occur at times.)
