Hey folks, have had a browse around and a search but haven’t been able to find anything on this topic.
Basically, I am going through my neighbouring suburbs and tidying streets that are in the wrong suburb. Most of the boundaries have had both sides of the street on the edge included in the boundary but others such us Normanhurst/Thornleigh NSW go right down the middle of the street.
An example is Nelson St - the west side is in Thornleigh whilst the east side is in Normanhurst.
How do I go about assigning the city to the street in these instances?
Leaving it unassigned doesn’t seem like a valid option. Would I assign one as the primary and add the other suburb under the “alternative name” section with the same street name?
The Alternative Name section is currently for future use and as far as I understand not used.
It’s one of those grey areas where no-one really knows as there is not one definitive answer.
Personally I would type the address into Google Maps, and see what the Suburb/City name is returned, and use that as the City name (Make sure you use the correct naming format, ie: If there is more than 1 instance of that Suburb anywhere in Australia, you need to affix the State on the end).

I wouldn’t use the Alternative Name section as this makes it harder to find any city smudges later when editing.
If you still can’t make your mind up, get a coin, toss it in the air… heads one Suburb, tails the other!
As you’ve suggested, I have been lining up updates with what Google Maps reports back and I have been fixing up pockets of nationally unique suburbs that erroneously have the state on the end to fall in line with the rest of the suburb.
Coin toss seems to be the most immediate and logical approach at the moment
I wouldn’t be surprised if residents in these particular streets know that they are on the boundary and flip flop between suburbs as required though.
I add one suburb in the primary name and the other in the alternate name. The alternate names are searchable in Waze. A good example of this near me is James St.
James St, Harristown
James St, Newtown
James St, Toowoomba
James St, South Toowoomba
James St, East Toowoomba
James St, Rangeville
All the same street and each section is searchable within Waze, but the primary street name is ‘A2 - Warrego Hwy’
Suberbs in alternate names also get highlighted using WME Color Highlights. I’ve used this to fix a few smudges.
Okay, so it sounds like there is benefit in using the alternate name as it allows a street to be searchable in both suburbs good for Wazers as it improves the likelihood of finding their desired address the first time).
I’ve not actually done this myself yet as I’ve been more concerned about getting the streets inside the suburban boundaries right and then I can come back and do this if it ends up being collectively acceptable.
I’d just select the most relevant suburb (though in most cases there won’t be one) if it were me. There is likely more edits around your area that could use the time more effectively than adding alternative names, which are not necessarily required with the Google search feature now implemented.
However in reality, it doesn’t do any harm either way to add the alternatives or not to add them. Go with whichever you feel like.
