We get traffic light outages a lot during the winter here in the Pacific Northwest. It would be nice to have a button for adding Traffic Signal/Light Outage".
I guess my issue with this, is that most of the time the outage is caused by a power outage, and there might a small to large grid of lights out… are you going to mark them all?
And then this goes against the design of the application, which is not to dead reckon your route, but trust that waze will route around issues that it knows about, which a signal should create a slower section for the real time speed.
(Again just like another post… design to route around traffic. Their does appear to be a problem with this logic right now).
It is still usefull to know whether the light is out. Here in South Africa we have traffic light outages for various reasons, normally not because of power outages but more likely rain, accidents and the occasional tampering. Living in Johannesburg and knowing which lights are out when would make a huge difference as being able to avoid that route by default knowing that the light is out regardless of traffic volume and flow would be a great help. Generally at peak hour there will be a pointsman in attendance but that is not always the case.
Can you not just use the Hazard option? At least it’ll flag something up. I know it’s not it’s intended use and Waze will probably never integrate your idea, but it’d work pretty well for this kinda thing.
The hazard option would work fine if “traffic lights out” was in the drop down list. Typing it in each time takes time and is not safe while driving. The time and effort it takes will detract users from identifying faulty “traffic lights” and driving in Johannesburg you would need to type it in a minimum of three times per trip.
It should not be difficult to add and would save a lot of time when logging the problem.
If it is a very common occurrence, and if your phone has this functionality (iOS does), make a shortcut called “ttl” and have the full text be “Traffic light is out.” That’s a lot fewer keypresses at least.
I’m not sure if Waze will add it to the list. As I’ve mentioned in other threads, we could have 1000 sub-items which may be used but the list, to be usable, needs to be kept minimal and to the most-often used.
Most of the traffic light outages I encounter here are single instances do to downed lines, water, or who knows… the majority are not do to area power outages.
If you can’t use Alan’s suggestion (brilliant idea btw!) I would suggest just the construction zone option. You need to slow down for those, the same would be said for broken traffic lights. Out of the available options at the moment, it seems the most sensible one

They are typically fixed that day or in a matter of hours - however during the time that they are out, it would be helpful for other WAZErs to know what lays ahead.
As we’ve hit 100 the last few days here in Dallas we’re having power outages all over the place and that includes traffic (stop) lights being out. I was surprised that there wasn’t a way to indicate it on the map because, as was mentioned up thread, much like construction this vastly changes traffic flow. So add me to the list of people that would like to see a better way to indicate traffic lights being out.

The storms that came through the Washington DC area knocked out power for many in the region on Friday evening (thus the AWS hiccups). Most of the problems are due to downed trees. Some traffic lights remain dark for the Monday morning commute. I’m finding the reports of dark traffic lights to be of minimal use. To many reports of dark traffic lights to get to important information regarding roads that are still closed due to downed trees and power lines.
Gonna bump this one after having to deal with a major intersection with a traffic light outage today. It was the only intersection to have an outage, and it caused a significant delay. I went through it twice, the second time on purpose after my first attempt to report it disappeared within minutes because I chose traffic jam and I guess cars were moving through it fast enough that I guess the system thought it wasn’t so bad. The second time I hit hazard and pulled over to figure out what option to use. I’d really put this as a far more critical and potential hazard than a car off to the side of the road, and more critical to time sensitive routing than roadkill on the road (I see that all the time, it quickly becomes just a red smear and a patch of fur).
Yes Waze does have to pick which hazards to have on the list and must keep the list short, but is roadkill really a big issue for a commuter focused app? And for that matter is roadkill not an Object on Road, which is another of the four choices for the on road hazards.
The staff really does need to look into the options again.
I’m also going to Bump this, as i had a similar issue on the way home today.
Luckily i leave pretty early so i can miss the traffic, and came across a Traffic light that was out, since it was still early, the traffic was not too backed up by it, and so i didn’t want to use traffic jam option. But i knew that within Half an hour or so, once traffic started picking up, it would become much worse, so a traffic light out hazard would be i really nice and informative to users, taking into consideration the time of day you are driving.
As this is quite a common occurrence where i live, i think in the mean time i will try use the Hazard option.
