Update Request for Yellowstone NP North Entrance Road

Hi, Could someone help updating the North Entrance Roads of Yellowstone National Park please:

  1. The “Old Gardiner Rd“ (ID: 76133529, etc.) currently on Waze (i.e. the post-2022 “North Entrance Road”) should be named “Temporary North Entrance Rd” according to official map by National Park Service. Note: It’s “temporary” as NPS plans for a new route called “Center Alignment.”
  2. The “North Entrance Rd” (ID: 503962537, etc.; i.e., the pre-2022 “North Entrance Road”) is almost entirely closed except for a short segment between Albright Ave (called “North Entrance Rd” on Waze, ID: 57339198) and Cedar Terrace Ave (called “Lower Mammoth” on Waze, ID: 57336312). This information can be seen on the NPS Map link above. It can also be confirmed by another user’s request as well as my personal visit. I suggest changing the road to Private Road, given that US-89 no longer passes through this road since its flooding and closure. However, it may be best to also remove the segments totally destroyed by the floods.
  3. As mentioned above, there are a bunch of other roads with incorrect names.

I posted it here as the park is primarily in WY, though some of the segments above are in Montana.

Thank you very much for your attention.

The road is correctly named Old Gardiner Road. It is only acting as the temporary road for the north entrance. It does not need to be renamed.

Once the NPS comes up with a plan, for all of this, I’m sure we’ll have it in place before it opens. I am in direct contact with one of the rangers at the park.

Regarding the sections of road that are closed - we have had closures in place since 2024 to ensure traffic doesn’t go that direction.

It may be best to use “Old Gardiner Road” as the alternate name rather than the primary name, considering that NPS calls it “Temporary North Entrance Rd” on their official map, while Google and Apple Maps simply call it “North Entrance Rd”

Okay but leaving a closed road that likely will never reopen as a “Major Highway” on the map doesn’t seem to make much sense. Also US-89 no longer passes here, which revokes its eligibility as Major Highway per Road types.

The closure is set through 2029. I think it will be fine.

I’m checking with my NPS contact to see what signs say. You’re the first person I have heard from that our current naming is confusing.
