Update request: Shrewsbury, MA

Harling,

Where to start… The left turn from Elm street to route 9 east is not prohibited (current restrictions accurately reflect this). The problem is that this turn is difficult most of the time. After talking with another AM I’d like to restrict the left. The problem with his plan is that is necessitates a U-Turn at the next light to the west. I don’t want to split the road, so I feel stuck. If we leave it alone we’ll probably keep seeing a UR here from time to time and exposing someone to a frustrating situation or we have to create a mess.

Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

P.S. Yet another example of how a U-turn option would save the day (potentially)

I am familiar with that stretch of Route 9. My take is, it’s a difficult turn when the traffic is dense (it really needs a light), but there is a short ramp area for people who want to turn left. And when traffic is bad, one person might prefer to “go with the flow” and head west, until they can get into the left-turn lane for a U-turn… but another driver might prefer to nose out into traffic, and will complain that we should have told him to take that left, if we tell him to wait an extra 5 minutes in traffic to take a U-turn.

Bottom line, I think we should leave the turn enabled. I have made some minor geometry adjustments accordingly.

Don’t remind me. The lack of U-turn controls on two-way roads is one of Waze’s major navigational blind spots.

Thanks for that explanation it really helps put things in perspective.
