Washington Street(s) naming convention

In some towns Washington Street is listed with an alternate name of “Washington Street, no city” such as Westwood, MA:

But when this road extends into Norwood, MA there is no alternate name:

In other towns the “no city” alternate name is labeled inconsistently such as Stoughton, MA

Nearly every town in eastern Massachusetts has a “Washington Street” and they are not all connected as one continuous roadway. For example Washington Street in Norwood does to not connect to Washington Street in adjacent Canton, which does not connect to Washington Street in adjacent Milton, which does not connect to Washington Street in adjacent Dorchester, etc.

My guess is the alternate “no city” convention should not apply to “Washington Street” as there are many dozens of Washington Streets in adjacent towns throughout eastern MA that don’t connect to each other. You need to be on the correct Washington Street to get to your destination.

Was unable to find any specific guidance on this in the wiki as to which format is correct.

Yes, you can pull out the “No City/Washington St” with no issue - it’s probably a left over from when the names were created. You can also change the “No City/State Hwy 1 Alt” (or other designation) to have the correct city name as well, just don’t fully remove those.

Also, there was some strangeness in the second permalink you posted - a small private road that was almost hidden by Washington St. I’ve cleaned up that area a bit.
