I’ve come across a bit of a conundrum, one that appears to be repeating itself quite a bit around certain parts of NI. Road signs not matching the road name, they are close, but not correct and I’m wondering what to do about it. I’m pretty sure I should be using the ‘Correct’ name and not the name indicated on the incorrect road sign, but, should I add the incorrect name as an alternative, or, should I just use what’s on the sign? below are some images to illustrate the point (in the first image, I have named it incorrectly just so I could find it easily again)

Al that road (inc the branch) can’t be the same name, can it?
What does bing or google have on their maps as the road name, it may be that someone “inadvertently” used a name from a different source which was incorrect?
Are there any other road/street name signs that contradict or confirm this one?
I would be using the name on the street sign but t may be worth clarifying/confirming the name with the local authority (but I wouldn’t wait for that, rename it anyway).

Yup all that road is the same name, the branch is needed to allow the house number to be set as it is too far from the main road. As for what all the other mapping solutions call it…
Google - Gallan Rd (other map objects are named incorrectly)
Bing - Gallan Rd
LPS/OSNI - Gallan Rd
Open Street Map - not named
Postcode address database - Gallan Rd
Here - Gallan Rd (although Gallan Bridge Rd is Gallon Bridge Rd)
To back up the Gallan bit, Gallan is the name of the townland, see here, I’ll spare you the rest of the links.
So my guess is someone in the road sign place messed up…

At its northern end, on the junction with Ligford Road, it has name signs on both sides of the road - one (older looking one of the same style as the one in Pip’s streetview image above) also shows the name as “Gallon Road”, whereas the newer looking one on the opposite side of the road shows the name as “Gallan Road”…
If all of the signage on the ground was consistent then I’d tend to defer to that over any other source, because as I’ve found with the OS data for this side of the Irish Sea, even the official datasets aren’t immune from typos.
However given that the newer-looking sign matches up with all of the other sources then I’d be thinking that the name has been changed at some point (or potentially has always been Gallan, but a typo was made when ordering the older signs) in which case sooner or later the remaining older signage will also get replaced, and we ought to be using Gallan as well.
Of course, there is still the slim possibility that the road really is called Gallon and the older signs are correct, but the official data does contain a typo which has then been propagated both through the other mapping sites AND down to whoever put together the new sign…

I’m sticking with Gallan then! maybe I should also lock it to stop others changing it
I have also found corroborating evidence that it was someone in the sign making place… Magheracoltan Rd, every map and database source says it is spelt that way but the road signs say Magheracolton Rd.

the road sign on the left says Gallon, the road sign on the right says Gallan, but which ones better, theres only one way to find out. FIGHT…
