I hope I’m not duplicating (I couldn’t find a similar question elsewhere) nor putting this in the wrong section…
I know we can already note speed limits on roads in the UK but the feature to let us know if we go over this limit (or report an incorrect limit whilst driving) is still not available.
Does anyone know when we can expect to see this feature? The editor still says “Speed Limits feature is almost ready to launch!” but that was dated April 06, 2016.
Also, is there anything I can do to help? (I’m adding speed limits if I spot a road that doesn’t have one but I don’t know whether that helps increase the likelihood that the feature becomes available in the UK more quickly.
I believe the goal was 70% of A Roads having verified speed limits for it to launch. Although I’m pretty sure we’ve reached that now, so I’m wondering the same thing!
Lots of UK editors (myself included) are working hard to get 70% of all A roads Speed Limit verified. There are a number of areas still in need of verifying. See here for an update on where we’re at, at the moment (2nd post has a heat map of roads updated / in need of updating).
I think the criteria HQ are looking for is “70% of highways” - major or minor. The UK standards have it that all A roads are minor highway, with the PRN roads being major, so “A roads” is an UK-centric way of saying “major & minor highways”.
Bear in mind that only a small percentage of A roads are part of the PRN. So with major highway could be at 100% and minor highway at 68%, we might still be below 70% overall. Those aren’t accurate figures, just an illustration.
Irrespective of what HQ are saying, I think it would be good to get all A roads (aka Major & Minor Highways) done before launch of speed limits. As long as we are making steady progress, I’d be in favour of holding off launch until we’ve done almost all of them - say 99% Major Highway, 95% Minor.
I agree with you @ditchi56, but I also think that releasing it would help the incorrect limits (as I’m sure some of them will have the boundaries set incorrectly etc.) be resolved quicker
It’ll be announced on here, twitter, facebook, etc.
But bear in mind that there won’t be 100% coverage at launch so pushing to 70 on that nasty single-track back road to test the functionality probably isn’t wise!
Ok, this might be a silly question… But… How do I get the speed limits?
I drive home this evening along roads I know have limits added, but no sign of the limit.s in the app
This probably just means you were driving within the limits. The speed limit warnings only appear if you go over the limit. Try driving 31 miles an hour on a 30 mile an hour road! Also: if you look at your current speed you should notice little tick marks around the circle and those increase as you speed up
