On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the A9 motorway was closed in both directions between Bex and Saint-Maurice (Canton of Vaud, Switzerland), from 1:00 PM until approximately 4:00 AM the following day, following an accident involving a heavy goods vehicle carrying liquefied natural gas. This is the only motorway axis connecting the cantons of Vaud and Valais — a transit corridor with no viable alternative.
That day, I left Gland (VD) at 5:00 PM heading toward Valais using Waze as my GPS. At that time, the section had already been closed for four hours. However, Waze displayed no closure alerts and suggested a travel time corresponding to normal conditions. It was only when reaching Villeneuve that the app suggested leaving the motorway, without ever indicating the nature of the problem or the impossibility of passing through that section.
I would like, if possible, to obtain the following information:
-
Was a Real Time Closure recorded in the Waze system for the A9 Bex–Saint-Maurice section on February 25, 2026? If so, at what time was it activated and by which source (user report, community editor, institutional partner)?
-
Do the Swiss road authorities responsible for this axis — notably the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO/ASTRA), Viasuisse, or the Vaud and Valais cantonal police — participate in the Waze for Cities program or have an automated data feed (CIFS) with Waze for transmitting road closures?
-
In the absence of an institutional partnership, what mechanisms does Waze use to detect and report a total motorway closure in an area with moderate user density like the Vaud Chablais?
Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,
Stéphane
