DC Stop Sign Cameras Not Showing Up

Unfortunately several stop sign cameras in the Columbia Heights/Petworth/Brightwood neighborhoods aren’t showing up on the Waze app for me, nor am I getting notified while driving. I logged in/out, deleted/re-downloaded the app, and made sure reports/alerts are all on. The camera locations are:

  • 13TH ST N/B @ GIRARD ST NW
  • 13TH ST N/B @ QUINCY ST NW
  • 13TH ST S/B @ RANDOLPH ST NW
  • 5TH ST N/B @ WEBSTER ST NW
  • KANSAS AVE NE/B @ BUCHANAN ST NW

Is anyone else having this problem? I looked at the Waze Map Editor and oddly there are cameras marked at those locations. Could someone confirm that they’re still active? Not sure if deleting and re-adding them would help or if it’s just a problem with my phone.

Soo… a few things:

  1. I think these cameras only appear while you have an active route, which passes by where the cameras are installed. So, if you are just driving without an active route, or panning the map in the app looking for cams, they will not appear on the map. Also,
  2. Waze HQ has decided that to prevent users from being overwhelmed with notifications, they will silence/hide some kinds of alerts for a few weeks after you encounter them 2 times. They call this a “familiarity filter”. These Stop Sign cameras are included in Familiarity Capping. So, if you’ve driven by these cameras multiple times recently, the cams will be hidden. HQ is working on ways to surface these “capped” cameras/features in a better way, without hiding them entirely. More to come on that in the future.
