Hi Editors,

I’ll appreciate your help with a map update.

Reason: This gate is for residents only, and will only open if the car has a transponder when traveling northbound. The gate will open for all vehicles traveling southbound, but is essentially a closed road when going north, unless you have the resident transponder. There is a live person at the OTHER GATE on Ridewood Lakes Blvd where non-residents can enter the neighborhood. Waze (and Google Maps) should NEVER direct someone to travel northbound through this gate.

Please fix this. We generally have a line of delivery people using google and/or Waze sitting at the gate waiting for a resident to tailgate in.

Thank you in advance,

Brian

Hi Brian and thanks for reaching out.

Unfortunately, the waze application has no way of knowing which wazers have the resident transponder and which do not. As a result, waze can only route any wazer to the closest gate.

Because of this, we design our gates in the waze map to route correctly for the residents inside the community as they will use the routing most often compared to any other group of non-residents. We rely on residents to communicate with guests/visitors in advance to know which gate is available to them or, more importantly, which are not available.

If I’m not understanding the problem you describe, please let me know.

Thanks.

Yeah… If you know how to tell Pizza Hut, UPS, FedEx, Amazon.com, etc… that they need to use the front gate and not the back one, let me know.

All delivery services that use Waze pull up to that back gate for houses near the back of the neighborhood. They are creating a problem waiting there, and tailgating residents. All because of your app. They don’t know any other way around.

How am I supposed to communicate proper directions to these drivers when I’ve never met them, and I don’t know them? The software they use (yours) needs to direct them properly.

The residents know what gates they can and cannot use. We can choose anytime. But the visitors, the ones who depend on your software, are the ones getting stuck, and frankly causing problems here by tailgating residents and breaking the gate arm.

I don’t need Waze to find my house. I use Waze all the time. In fact, when coming home, I generally turn Waze off when I exit the highway. I then choose which gate I want to use. I don’t want to hear turn by turn all through the neighborhood. There really is no problem in directing all neighborhood traffic to the front gate, as that is the proper way to enter!

Also – EVERYONE can exit through that gate. It is just the entering that is the problem. Also be aware, the gate is CLEARLY marked and instructions given to use the front gate. But the drivers still sit there, waiting to tailgate in a resident. A problem created by Waze that can only be fixed by Waze.

How about this… “The address you have chosen is inside a gated neighborhood. Do you wish to navigate there as a guest or a resident?”

Software is an amazing thing.

I think I’ll take a copy of this thread to the next HOA meeting. Would your policy change if over 100 residents posted about this problem on this forum?

I know. my neighbors would agree to this, as it costs us money through our HOA dues to keep replacing the broken gate that is caused by you directing people there.

As volunteer map editors we do not have the ability to change the Waze application. But, we can add labeling to the entrances such that it should be clear to anyone searching in the waze app as to which entrance is appropriate for visitors.

To that end, can you tell us:

  1. What is the name of the community inside the gates? (We’ll use that as part of the labeling. e.g. “Sunset Hills Community – Visitor only gate”)
  2. for the visitor only gate that you said is manned, is there a telephone number you can share? We would also provide that number in the labeling so that a visitor can call if they have any questions.

Thanks.
