Local champs from Miami… I need your help.
I live in a gated community and every time someone tries to get directions to our community Waze try to send them thru a residents only gate which you need a car sticker for it to open, so you have to explain to them to use the main entrance which is a few blocks away… annoying.
I have no idea how to formally request that change on the map so that’s why Im asking for your help. I’ll mail a candy to whomever gets this resolved and an entire gated community will benefit and be grateful!
The issue here is that Waze does not know the difference between a commuter and a resident. Waze is mapped for commuters and we must consider all routes for a community’s residents. With the current setup, Waze will route through the closest gate.
What we could do here is make an place point for the community, and have visitors navigate to that place point. Does the community have a formal name?
Yes it is Bal Harbour Village.
I guess it would be best if Waze just would route everybody thru the main entrance and if you are a resident and know there is a residents entrance then just go out of Waze’s route and use it…
What will happen is that Waze will route everybody to that place point that I’ll create called Bal Harbour Village if they search for it by name. If they search by address, Waze will route through the closest gate. They will still get routed to the resident gate as a non-resident if they do not search by the Bal Harbour Village place point.
Thanks but I still don’t understand why it needs to be done like that. If I call an Uber from inside the community or if you order a pizza we are still getting the issue.
Nobody uses the place point in this case really. It is not a landmark.
I insist, Waze should be blocked from offering to use the residents gate. If you are a resident you know that gate exists, if you are not you will be sent thru the main gate.
Thanks again…
Waze maps for all commuters, not just residents and visitors. We can’t block access to residents only. If we block access, every user would be routed to the main gate. To get around this problem, we can create a point at the main gate (I believe we’ll call it “Bal Harbour Village - Main Gate” to avoid confusion between people navigating to the village itself) for people to navigate to.
Since Waze cannot differentiate between residents and visitors to a private community like that one, we can’t actually adjusting the routing into the community. Instead, we added a new place point called Bal Harbour Village - Main Gate. This should show up in the app within a week. You can direct visitors to this location in Waze. Even better, you can have them enter the address on the inside of the community and then “add a stop” for the Bal Harbour Village - Main Gate. At least this way, Waze should route through the main gate over at Habour Way and Collins Ave.
Exactly, why can’t you block access for ALL users thru that gate and if you are a resident then you can choose if you would like to go out of the Waze’s route and use that exclusive gate and let Waze recalculate the route?
The issue is that it has to be a blanket solution, middle-of-the-way for everybody. Since Waze is an app for commuters, we cater to that community of users. We cannot disable routes simply out of preference of a single resident. The solution provided just requires a bit more communication between the user and whatever service he/she is using that will be visiting the complex.
I still feel we are missing the point here… if you are not a resident then Waze is sending you thru the wrong route by trying to send you thru the residents gate. If you are a pizza delivery you will just put the address you are going to and let Waze tell you the best route and in this case Waze is not showing you the best route. It is 100 times easier for residents who know exactly where the gates are to decide without Waze which gate they would like to use than to explain the pizza delivery after you order online without human contact that there are 2 gates and in case Waze tries to send them thru the resident gate they should add an extra stop, etc etc. The residents gate is on a piece of private road and Waze cannot send you thru a private street. That’s all it really is.
Waze is a commuting app, meaning to/from work or errands, at its core. We route for the majority of whatever area or place it is, so going into/out of a neighborhood the most is the resident. Therefore, we map for the resident. We also get way more angry people when the residents are routed incorrectly every single day into their own neighborhood. There is no good solution where residents AND visitors will be happy. So, we pick the one who goes in/out of the neighborhood more, the resident. Thanks for your posts, the place for the neighborhood public entrance should be working.
