GPS users are directed to gate that is no available

For over 20 years, visitors (guests, vendors, service providers, etc.) to Pelican Sound Golf and River Club, Estero, Florida 33928, have been directed by GPS systems to the gate entrance at the intersection of Williams Road and Sound Way. This is an entrance for residents only, and is accessible only with a club issued, member only wireless transmitter. This gate, one of three to the property is not staffed and does not have a two-way voice contact or keypad.

This misdirection has inconvenienced hundreds of visitors and required them to turn around and locate one of the two other entrances off State Highway 41 (Tamami Trail). Various attempts have been made by several individuals to correct this GPS error over the years, with no success to date. It appears that several GPS services use the same core information, as multiple GPS guidance systems direct visitors to the Williams Gate. Twenty two years ago the Williams entrance was used as the initial construction entrance and was apparently coded as the primary entrance in GPS at that time. The community was completed and the construction entrance disbanded around 2002.

The GPS directions need to be changed from the Williams Road Gate entrance to one of two of the other entrances to the property:

  1. Non-commercial visitors (relatives, friends, etc.) have two entrances where they may enter the property. The first is the Corkscrew Road Gate Entrance and it is located one half mile west of State Highway 41 at the end of Corkscrew Road. This gate is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The second entrance is the Pelican Sound Golf and River Club Main Entrance located on the west side of Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) one half mile south of Corkscrew Road. This entrance is closed at 11:00 pm daily.

  2. Commercial visitors (vendors, service providers, etc.) are to enter only at the Pelican Sound Golf and River Club Main Entrance, located on the west side of Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) one half mile south of Corkscrew Road.

These two entrances are the ONLY entrances anyone who is not a registered owner with appropriate, approved, club-issued devices should be directed to.

Please take whatever action necessary to correct and update GPS guidance on Waze or another other core GPS system being used by multiple providers.

Hello and thanks for reaching out.

The waze app has no way of knowing which wazers are members, commercial or non-commercial visitors. In all three cases, if a wazer enters a destination inside the club gates, waze will route any to what it determines to be the fastest route. While the waze app has no way to distinguish members from guests, we can and have added gates there which will prevent through routing across the property and waze relies on members of the club to make sure guests understand which gate(s) are available to them.

What I have been able to do is create waze places at each of the gated entrances.

The gate at Sound Way has a waze point place added named Pelican Sound Golf and River Club Member Entrance.

Similarly, the gate at Corkscrew Rd has been named Pelican Sound Golf and River Club Non-Commercial Guest Entrance

Finally, the gate at Pelican Sound Blvd is named Pelican Sound Golf and River Club Commercial Guest Entrance.

Please note that even with these named places on the map, they will not help at all if the guests are not alerted to search for the “Commercial Guest Entrance” for example. With Waze, this is fairly simple. The wazer first enters the address inside the club they want to visit, and use the ‘add a stop’ feature and that added stop would be to one of the appropriate gates.

Thanks.
