Re:Post as per personal conversation
I’ve been thinking about this post, but it a big topic and I’ve been procrastinating
Much has changed with Waze since I started…
The Cities field has always been controversial.
To add to the complexity the NZ address system is different to many parts of the world.
e.g
83 Dundale Ave
Blockhouse Bay
Auckland 0600
30 Pitt St
Parramatta NSW 2150
Notice is Australia they don’t use the city “Sydney” anywhere in the address. Strange I know but I suspect that this is the case in many parts of the world?
The question is do we use the “suburb” or “city” in the city field?
In the beginning people used 3 methods
- Auckland
- Blockhouse Bay
- Blockhouse Bay, Auckland
The last is the most correct but looks awful on the Waze client.
In the beginning to find a street address information could only be found in waze. But now the address can be found by information in Google maps, so the address is now not so important.
To make doubly sure of the correct address was found we added the full address to the alt field
Now that we have done this changing the city field to Auckland is not such a big deal.
Then the question is why?
To make the map look good when you zoom out on the client.
Waze has this funny system that bigger city area polygons take preference when zooming out

Because rural areas had bigger land mass therefore they would show up before Auckland as an example
I had more stuff to say but this will do for now…
