Routing instructions on minor roads

Hi,

I travel frequently out in the sticks, where most roads are minor and unnamed. A route I’ve followed a few times recently throws up some routing problems, some of which I’ve worked out and sorted out problems, but I’ve one which is eluding me.

On the permalink:-

https://world.waze.com/editor/?lon=-1.57555&lat=51.97568&zoom=5&layers=BFTFTTTFTTFTTTTFTTTTFT

I arrive on the road coming from SSE, and leave on the road heading NNE, via the section of road running approx. WNW.

At each junction I have to give way, however, Waze completely ignores the first junction, and then correctly states “turn right” at the second. This is worse than otherwise may be the case, as the first junction is “Stop and Give Way”, also the view to the right is fully blind, helped to a very limited degree by mirrors positioned across the road - anyone blindly following Waze (not recommended ;-)) could end up in trouble…

I’ve looked through the forums, and the wiki, have checked the junction out, and tried to find names for the roads, all to no avail.

Is there a fix or workaround for this problem?

Thanks,
Will.

the problem is at a cross roads waze has no way of knowing which road has right of way, for this it assumes you are watching the road and paying attention to signs.

The only way (that I know) you will receive an instruction, is if the two roads are named differently, at which point you will receive a “continue on” instruction, but this is just telling you that the road name changes, it has no idea about whether or not you should stop or not. although I am sure it would be taken into account for the route.

i have yet to see a sat nav system that copes with this scenario, and i think the more a sat nav tells you the less you pay attention to the road ( which I used to do with my old one, which warned me if I was speeding)

There are lots of minor road junctions like this where the right of way does not follow the line of the road. I tweak the geometry. Of course right now I can’t seem to find an example to give you a permalink.

Yeah it depends on the angle of the join. There’s a section in the wiki here http://wiki.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Junction_Style_Guide#Controlling_Turn_Instructions

Hi,

You’ll find quite a few of these type of junctions on the smaller country roads but they are not exclusive to to them.

Reworking the geometry to match the actual road layout/junction and that usually corrects things.

Ok, thanks to all, I’ll immerse myself in the wiki.

It’s not as though I can get WME to work at the moment

Well, it’s all a case of knowing what to search for…

But much easier if offered a pertinent link and guidance :-).

Thanks for that, I’m much empowered ;-).

Cheers,
Will.

The best example on that wiki page is in the section headed “Y intersections”. But you can apply the same principle to any type of junction.

I found an example (but it’s still not an actual crossroads):

Hi,

Found one (actually, found loads but only remember to do a cap when doing this one!) for you.

Odd_Junction.jpg

As you see the priorities for the junction could be misinterpreted with the way they were on the map.
Safe bet is to concentrate on the driving as you are not going to know exactly what is ahead…

Des. . .

Hi Des, thanks, I’ve now got a grasp of that.

I really think that that should be near the top of the wiki for new editors to absorb, as it’s fundamental to the routing working correctly…

(I’d missed it, obviously, and I did at least try to edit correctly!)

In relation to the original junction at the start of the thread, this didn’t directly assist, as I couldn’t see any way to directly apply it to it ( if you see what I mean ;-)). However I thought a bodge was in order, so I constructed two nodes very close together on the major road, so it will cause a “turn left then right” instruction, instead of nothing. I did note the comment earlier that other sat-navs wouldn’t acknowledge the junction either, but I think that’s incorrect, and I have yet to travel that route with my other sat-nav to check…

Will.

About the continue on instruction… There is one internally, but it won’t say it. Don’t know why, so that point is moot really. At least until waze sort it out.
