Scheduled Restrictions

Hi all,

Having seen that scheduled restrictions are now available to all, does anyone know of any in SA? I can only think of the buses on Steve Biko Rd (Voortrekker Rd) but I hardly see it worth implementing if users won’t be affected.

Please post details if you’re sure of any (even if you’ve already implemented them in the editor)

Thanks

Kyle

Hi

I know that there are some roads that become one way for a few hours in the afternoon next to some schools in elmapark and Eden Glen areas.
The holy rosary school and edenglen primary school if I am not mistaken.

There are quite a few gated suburbs that have gates which are open at certain times of the day, and closed the rest of the time; would this be usable for those cases?

Hi Tristan,

I’ve already added a few of those from WME Beta where we had URs generated. It is ideal for all the gated off roads where there is only one or two entrances left open at night. As you know, we previously just permanently disconnected those where majority of times it was deemed an incorrect route, as we had no other option.
TimBones’ WME Color Highlighter script already caters for indicating those as far as I’m aware, so they should be visible. Individual turns with the restrictions appear yellow in WME.

If you check the Livemap route for this short route, and select times between 18:00 and 06:00, you will be routed the ‘long way round’ via Burford Rd. Select any other time during normal daylight hours & it will be direct from Louis Botha Ave onto 6th St.

I did this ‘area’ by adding the restrictions to few short segments which can be seen here. In this case it is easier and more logical to do instead of setting and duplicating the times for each individual turn itself onto and from the adjacent segments.
It was said that during the times where segment restrictions are active, they behave just like Private Roads. Waze will route to addresses ON that segment, but will not route traffic through that segment to other destinations.

In general, I’m not familiar with any local places that have Freeways with HOV or peak hour Contra-flow freeway lanes like some of the other major cities have to cater for volumes. Rod might be able to comment on Cape Town here.
In most places where additional lanes are created, it is usually for buses/public transport only and does not or should not affect the average Wazer. One example is Steve Biko Rd (old Voortrekker Rd) in Gezina, Pretoria. Not sure if it’s still done, but the right-most lane was closed off by inserting plastic reflective poles at short intervals into special receptacles in the road, and dedicated for public transport in the mornings.
[EDIT] Duh… as Kyle already mentioned in the OP, so obviously still being done

I’ve added a couple in Cape Town, these are suburbs that have restrict entry during the morning rush hour to prevent the back street rat runs…

Thanks for the feedback. I had completely forgotten about the gated communities. It seems like turn restrictions would be ideal for that. Is there a consensus on the road type in these communities? i.e. Street as opposed to private road.

I hadn’t realised you can set a time based restriction like xcentricdave has in his previous post - I thought it was for whole segments only.

To be honest I’ve never actually seen it in operation but there are new road signs around indicating it is still active.

I think in most cases you would still want to prevent through routing within communities that are permanently gated or gated and controlled at night, so private road would apply there. Where the gating is not permanent and access is not controlled, the normal street type can apply.
Just bear in mind where portions are locked off at night and the main entrance(s) have access control, users would generate URs if they are sent through the area.

The benefit with segment restrictions is that you only need to set up the A->B times and vehicles, and copy that to the B->A direction in most cases.
In Dave’s example, you need to set each individual turn into and out of the area which technically should be a minimum of 4 individual restriction for a normal 3-way junction entrance, and up to 6 individual restrictions for a normal 4-way intersection where entrance to and from only one leg is restricted.
You have to keep in mind that residents living on a gated road that is closed off would need to be routed OUT via the main gate(s) as well.
