🚦 Green light: Traffic Lights have arrived in WME Production

Hi everyone,

We are excited to announce the launch of the Traffic Lights feature in WME Production for the IL (Israel) environment. Although the feature is already released in IL, it remains in WME Beta for NA (North America) and ROW (Rest of World), and we are actively collecting feedback as we move towards a full global launch.

Why Traffic Lights?

We are enhancing the Waze map with Traffic Lights to offer even better navigation instructions. This feature brings more clarity, especially at complex intersections. By adding real-world references, such as “turn left at the traffic light”, we make instructions more intuitive. This helps drivers orient themselves better, identify turns with more certainty, and navigate more safely and easily.

What is included in this WME version?

Traffic Lights can now be mapped in Production (IL only) and in Beta (NA and ROW). These features are added to a segment and attach to the segment end. We have prepared a detailed mapping guide to help you get started. :right_arrow: Check out the Mapping Guide HERE.

Default Lock Level: The default lock level for Traffic Lights is 4, but this can be configured by country. If you would like to request a change to the minimum lock level for your country, please contact your community leadership so they can submit the request.

Note for the Israel Community: the extended Beta phase in IL was fundamental to refining the functionality of this feature. A huge thank you to all the editors who contributed during this period; your dedication resulted in more than 10,000 traffic lights mapped!

App Behavior: To see how this appears to drivers, please refer to the corresponding section in the Mapping Guide.

What’s next?

We are working towards a full Production launch for all environments and will keep this topic updated as that happens. Beta Editors, please continue to leave your feedback and questions in the dedicated topic on the forum.

Important: current impact on WME Production (NA and ROW)

While Traffic Lights are in Beta for NA and ROW, their presence will have a direct impact on the Production environment.

Known issue: “Hidden” alerts in Production

If an editor adds a traffic light in the Beta environment, or if traffic lights are included in a recent data import for certain countries, this data is saved to the map. However, because the feature is not yet active in Production, these alerts will be invisible to editors using WME Production.

If you try to modify a segment that contains one of these “hidden” alerts, an error may occur. This is a built-in protection to prevent the new data from being corrupted or accidentally deleted during the Beta phase. We ensure that this visibility issue is temporary and will only last as long as the feature is in Beta.

Specific behaviors on segments with traffic lights:

Actions that will currently result in an error in Production:

  • Changing the direction of a segment to a direction that makes the traffic light inaccessible.
  • Modifying the geometry of a node that has a traffic light on one of its segments (at the node end).
  • Splitting a segment that has a traffic light.
  • Merging segments (in this case, the bridge icon will not appear).
  • Deleting a segment with a traffic light (to perform this action, the traffic light will need to be deleted first).

Actions that will continue to work normally for editors with sufficient permissions:

  • Changing the direction of a segment while keeping the traffic light accessible.
  • Geometry changes that do not include the end nodes or that include end nodes without a traffic light.
  • Any change to segment attributes, such as name, speed limit, width, etc.

We understand that any impact on mapping is a concern, so we trust that each community will decide how to proceed with mapping during this transition.

We are excited to get this feature into your hands and hope it will be useful in improving the driver experience.

Best,
By: Danit

Great progress! Even before traffic lights were in the app, every now and then there were URs complaining that they weren’t showing up on the map.

Shouldn’t it be used for pedestrian signals where there is only one segment?

Questions, ideas, suggestions, and discussions on the subject should be posted in the beta forum, as it is a feature in WME Beta and Beta App.

This post was made only because the functionality may impact production edits.

Hi everyone,

Following up on our previous announcement, we are pleased to share that the Traffic Lights feature is now available in WME Production for all environments!

The mapping progress we saw during the Beta phase was impressive. Globally, the community has already mapped more than 230,000 traffic lights in a very short period. This incredible effort is already setting the stage for an even better navigation experience for all Wazers.

While many communities have delved deep into mapping, we want to give a special shout-out to the five communities that have mapped the most so far (excluding Israel, which we celebrated in our last post):

  • USA: 77,236 traffic lights
  • UK: 18,414 traffic lights
  • Canada: 11,893 traffic lights
  • Germany: 9,979 traffic lights
  • Brazil: 9,486 traffic lights

We are looking forward to seeing more and more traffic lights on the map. :horizontal_traffic_light: To support editing efforts, we are re-sharing our Mapping Guide, which we hope will be a user-friendly and helpful resource :slightly_smiling_face:

About the App Launch

The Beta phase was crucial in helping us identify areas where we could improve our guidance heuristics. We continue to work on these improvements, and our feedback collection process is in full swing.

As a reminder, the Production launch for the app will depend on traffic light coverage in WME. We are closely monitoring coverage levels globally to determine when a region is ready to enable the feature for drivers.

Thank you for sharing this journey with us as we take another important step in implementing the feature. We continue to actively collect feedback and especially encourage those who are just starting to have access to the feature to share their experiences with us.

Best regards,

It’s going to be very good for drivers.

excellent news!!

It’s going to be quite a revolution in driver instructions!

Good morning @daviaraujo93!

How’s it going? Quick question! Where there are already red light cameras and red light and speed cameras at intersections, do these also need to be added?

Hi @MarcaoGaloDoido13! Sorry for jumping in on a question that wasn’t directed at me, lol.

But you can map it as usual, because in this case the camera icon will merge with the traffic light icon and visually it will show up as just one thing in the app.

However, I’ve noticed that in these cases, there aren’t any voice instructions regarding the traffic light for turns.

Okay, and thanks for the clarification!

Thanks for the help @EsdrasFarao, this is the expected behavior as stated in the Wazeopedia.

However, we are conducting some tests to identify the behavior of speed camera + traffic light and red light camera + traffic light combos; both cases are grouped, but it may interfere with voice instructions for turns.

If you identify any unexpected or non-standard behavior, please leave feedback in the feature’s global topic.

A question has come up:

In this case where the traffic light isn’t at a road intersection, but at a crosswalk. Split the segment to include the traffic light?

I have that question too; here in BSB we have many like that in the entrequadras (between-blocks) that are for crosswalks.

Man, the Champs headed off for Carnival and delayed the debate about this alert, but it’s coming on the 28th when voting ends. I suggest waiting a bit to map these cases so you don’t end up doing the work twice.

I haven’t mapped those yet, just the intersections; I was waiting for guidance on that.

Another similar situation:

The traffic light is located after the intersection in one direction; Permalink

See if it improves this way
