School zones, new Waze feature rolling out

The editing level for School Zones is at least 3, probably 4, I’m a bit unsure.

Things moved a bit fast from both Waze and our side to introduce this; the train has left the station. Waze shouldn’t have launched this before they also had support for speed reductions.

The list for us to keep track of where we’ve added them should have been created from the start; now it’s too late.

In summary, we’re adding them as they’re meant to be used long-term with any potential speed reductions, so that feature goes live as soon as the support arrives.

Ah okay

Yeah, maybe it wouldn’t be so appropriate to add it there after all, where I’m editing a lot right now in small villages in central Småland, like. I’ve noticed that a lot of things there haven’t been touched in about 10 years-ish; I mean, they’ll hardly be updated later on, and sooner or later you stop editing yourself anyway.

TBSL (Time Based Speed Limits) for school zones has been live in the beta for a while now. It works fine if you have a route set through the area. If no route is set, the speed limit of the segment is shown. If you turn off the route while in the school zone, the speed limit changes from the one specified for the school zone to the one specified for the segment.

Nice , yeah, I guess you can really say “finally” here

I’m not quite following.
Is the zone speed only displayed if you’re navigating through a school zone and not if you’re just driving along the stretch?

Yes, at least for me, which is a bug. @mahava has this been brought up in the beta forum?

/Ulle

Hmm no, not that I’ve seen, let me check,

Can’t you throw a schedule on a school zone in Strängnäs? So I can test and report bugs, Fogdö school has time-limited speed limits and it’s not far for me to take a detour there

I’ve added school zones for “all” schools in Sörmland. But I haven’t changed the normal speed limit. However, the reduced speed is there, but it’s not helping right now. It takes 2 days before it updates in the app if I change the normal speed now. Do you want to try Fogdö School and I’ll change it right away…?

Yeah, go ahead and do that so I can test after the weekend next week, they have varying speeds there.

Regardless, it’s never wrong to have as many as possible on a beta report.

I couldn’t find any report or anyone who had noted it, but I’ve noted your observations in the thread about the feature, @ulle2, and I see others mentioning the same thing there as well. I added that we’ve also noted it and are working on reproducing it.

Add the school zones as the final solution should be, as the last part mentioned by ulle2 is now rolling out = Regular speed on the road segment and the deviating speed in the zone.

I’ve now updated 19 out of 249 school zones in Södermanland County (+ a few outside the county) with the correct regular speed on the segment and the variable speed limit for the school zone. Hope the beta tests are going well!

@mahava There’s one more school zone in Strängnäs with a variable speed limit at Länna School, and 8 locations in Eskilstuna. Let me know if you’d like to know more.

Thanks, perfect, it’s not far there either, though now the school zone alerts seem to be toast in the latest beta, so I’ll have to wait

I took a different route to work this morning and passed a school zone with navigation on. Got the warning in Waze Beta Android Auto. A bit unclear if I was on v5.17.0.1 or the previous version v5.16.90.901 (my phone updated without my knowledge). However, there is no speed change on that stretch, so nothing to report on that front.

Got word that it’s WAD from my bug report about the speeds not changing while roaming, but apparently it’s supposed to work now in the latest beta with a route

“Currently school zone alerts are not shown in roaming. Also, if the route ends within the school zone, the speed limit drops to the street limit value. This is an expected behavior so I will be closing this case as ‘works as designed’.”

They asked me to create a suggestion in the beta, so I’ll obviously do that

For me, the reduced speed limit in the school zone worked today with the CarPlay beta and a route active. When I stop the route while inside the school zone, the reduced speed limit disappears and the one set for the segment is displayed.

Ah, that’s great, then at least that bug is solved and it should be working as intended now, since the fact that it doesn’t work while roaming is by design. As I understood from the meetup when the question was asked, implementing support for it was complex.

It shouldn’t be complex, Waze knows where the vehicle is and where the school zone starts and ends. When you cross the boundary into the school zone, change the speed limit to the school zone limit. How hard can it be…

Good question, I agree, and this is almost a step backwards. Those of you in the beta, feel free to vote for the suggestion here: https://www.waze.com/discuss/t/enable-school-zone-scheduled-limits-to-be-shown-also-in-roaming/ Not sure if there’s a UserVoice for it.
