Hello,
I am leaving a drafting proposal:
What does the Supervisor role mean?
Local Champs, as regional supervisors, seek to ensure quality control and mentorship within their region. Their primary focus is to guarantee that map edits meet technical standards, comply with the rules established by the community itself, and provide direct support to other editors. Their key responsibilities include:
- Map Quality Control: Actively monitoring recent edits in their area to prevent errors, fix routing issues, and ensure the overall integrity of the map.
- Mentoring and Technical Support: Guiding entry-level and intermediate editors, resolving doubts about guidelines, and teaching best practices for editing and the use of tools or scripts.
- Management of Complex Reports: The priority is to ensure there is someone actively resolving them. This includes managing Map Suggestions, PURs (Place Update Requests), Update Requests (URs), and Map Problems (MPs) that require an advanced level of knowledge or higher editing permissions to be resolved.
- Management of Closures and Restrictions: Validating and managing road closures (closures) due to events, emergencies, or public works, ensuring that the information in the app is accurate and timely for drivers.
- Regional Forum: Monitoring that all posts in their regional forum are resolved efficiently.
The Coordinator Role
The Coordinator takes on the macro leadership of the community, in charge of strategic management at the national level and acting as the direct link with the Waze team. Their role is fundamental in setting the direction, structure, and cohesion of the editing community.
The Coordinator role requires individuals who are willing to dedicate more time than a Local Champ and who understand what is happening in the WME, the Mexico forum, and the global forum. It is essential that they have deep knowledge of the WME and the app.
Their key responsibilities include:
- Official Liaison: Acting as the primary communication channel between the local community (including Local Champs) and the staff, channeling technical requirements, reporting critical failures, and communicating official updates.
- Conflict Resolution and Leadership: Intervening as a mediator and decision-maker in complex disagreements between community members, ensuring a collaborative, orderly, and respectful work environment.
- Community Development: Boosting active participation by organizing local events, evaluating outstanding editors for promotion to leadership roles, and the general structuring of work teams.
- Management of the Waze Community Hub: Coordinators are responsible for processing requests handled in the portal, such as level increases, approval of Area Managers, city deletions, or city adjustments.
Appointment and Revocation of Leadership Roles
The leadership structure requires clear mechanisms to formalize the advancement of outstanding members and, when necessary, withdraw permissions if regulations or expected responsibilities are not met.
Local Champs
- Who can propose a Local Champ? Anyone in the community can propose a candidate for Local Champ. Putting into practice the principle that the community elects them, once someone is proposed, their candidacy is evaluated by the Coordinators and put to a vote by the Local Champs. The candidate’s history, editing quality, and willingness to dedicate time to tasks beyond map editing are objectively evaluated. If the evaluation or vote is not favorable for the candidate, the reasons must be reported to both the candidate and the person who proposed them.
- Who can revoke the role? While the ideal is for an inactive Champ or one unable to perform to voluntarily step down, when this does not happen, removal can be requested by the Coordinators or by a majority of the Champ panel. It should be noted that, in the event of prolonged inactivity, removal can be proposed by any member of the community. Other justifiable causes for revocation include serious violations of guidelines or behaviors that damage the community environment.
Coordinators
Given that the Coordinator is the strategic leader of the region, their designation and possible removal require the highest level of scrutiny.
- Who can propose a Coordinator? The proposal to appoint a new Coordinator can come from the Waze staff or from the current Coordinators in office. Once the candidate is presented, their official appointment requires the majority approval of the community Champs.
- Who can revoke the role? The ideal scenario is always for a Coordinator to resign voluntarily when they perceive they no longer have the time or the desire to fulfill their responsibilities. If not, removal from the position is decided by a vote of the Champs. However, an important exception should be noted: in the event of inactivity, the Waze staff has the authority to withdraw the role directly and without prior notice.
