Spotted a user report made today - apparently Waze told someone they could turn right from the westbound A232 - Stafford Road right on to Purley Way, whereas the correct route should have been up the stretch of Epsom Rd that runs alongside Waddon Station.
All the junctions look as though they need simplification which I’m happy to try and do this evening, but the A23 segments are locked, by numbered users rather than identifiable user names.
I’ve found that, when the display shows numbered users, hitting the “Permalink” link down the bottom right to reload the page normally changes to showing the “real” users.
I also find that useful when editing: as I zoom in and out or pan around, the selectable segments often end up to the right of the satellite images & drawn-in roads. Hitting the link gets them all lined up again.
I think i only added the one segment joining Purley Way to Stafford road heading Northbound…
The trouble with simplifying the junction is that if you take any of the slip roads out, the driver may end up in the middle of Fiveways Junction trying to do a Left turn when they should have used the slip road…
I’d be interested to see how you’d simplify it though… :o)
I think this junction should just have the single node with the appropriate turn restrictions in place.
If you’re driving south down the A23 and want to turn left into Stafford Rd, you’d be in the left hand lane and see the signposted slip for the A232. It’s clearly signed that you have to go up to the junction to go left into Denning Avenue, and you need to get in the right-hand lane to turn right into Stafford Rd to go towards Wallington.
With a single node, Waze would tell you to turn left or right, and reasonable drivers would be in the appropriate lane.
If you’re driving north up the A23 and want to turn left into Stafford Rd towards Wallington, the slip road is at the lights. It’s clearly signposted that you need to be in the rh lane to turn right for Denning Ave or Stafford Rd. Again, Waze would give you the correct turn instructions.
If you were on Stafford Rd going south-west and wanted to turn left into Denning Ave, the slip road is right at the lights.
All other routings require you to go onto the main junction, where, again, Waze would direct you correctly. So I don’t think we need any of the slip roads on that junction on the map.
I would agree if there was a wide separation of the slips from the main junction. But in this case, all the slips are directly adjacent to the traffic lights for the main junction, and all have Give Way signs enforcing a cautious approach to joining the exit route, so I don’t see any real value in complicating the visual representation of the junction on the client unnecessarily.
I do accept that the slip from Purley Way southbound left onto Stafford Rd could possibly be justified in that it has its own lane approaching the junction, but the other slips share the left hand lane approaching the lights and probably only exist to facilitate longer vehicles making the turn, so I can’t see them being justified.
I’d be happy with a single node junction plus the slip from A23 southbound onto A232 eastbound. As the A23 is locked, I have to leave it to my more experienced and higher ranking colleagues to make the final decision and any changes.
For a junction that small, the details won’t be visible on the client anyway. Better to have a simple instruction to “turn left” and let the driver follow the road signs and road markings.
Woodvale - do you want to simplify and then we can all check how it works in reality. I think the southbound left turn needs to be there, if I recall correctly I pared this junction right back but then added it back in as you really need a keep left there.
Rich - I know that visual representation is important but we do need a balance with simplicity, and as others have pointed out in many cases you won’t see the extra lane. It may however affect the instructions (for better or for worse).
I’ve deleted the superflous nodes where you deleted the slips. Depending on who you speak to, extra nodes are a potential cause of problems. It does no harm to remove them.
Is there an easy way to merge adjacent segments where a node is not necessary? Or is it a case of deleting one segment and extending the other to cover where it was?
