URGENT Safety Edit: False connection on Wallace Road / Wallace Road North, Beachmere QLD

Hi Waze Australia Team,

I am writing to request an urgent map edit regarding a serious safety hazard in Beachmere, QLD.

The Issue: The map currently shows a drivable connection between Wallace Road and Wallace Road North. In reality, the section between house number 200 and house number 228 is a “no through road” consisting of a narrow forest track with no vehicle access.

The Consequence: Navigation systems are currently routing traffic through this forest track as if it were a through road. This is a critical safety issue; previously, an ambulance was delayed due to this mapping error, which resulted in a fatality.

Request: Please break the connectivity/delete the road segment between #200 and #228 immediately.

  • Wallace Road should dead-end at #200.
  • Wallace Road North begins at #228 and continues towards Bribie Island Road.

Location: “Beachmere, QLD - Wallace Road North”

Thank you for your help in fixing this dangerous routing error.

Thanks Brandon,
It was an issue in the past (I know because I had to change me Waze home address to be 238 wallace road rather than 228 to stop it from navigating via beachmere rroad). I just checked navigation from my house to 200 wallace road and it seems to be correct asking me to do the big loop so pbviously it is aware of the no through road which is great. I have reached out to Apple and google (maps) to fix this as well as to the local council GIS team. Thanks for looking into it.

Glad to hear it’s working as expected @Orenski.

I removed my earlier comment after noticing there might be more going on with the addressing, and I wanted to take a closer look. As mentioned, the roads themselves have been mapped correctly (as separate roads) in Waze since before 2019, but the house number data is a bit more complex.

Waze primarily relies on Google’s address data, and we only override it when necessary. At the moment, Google lists 228 as Wallace Rd, not Wallace Rd North, and it doesn’t show any Beachmere addresses for Wallace Rd North at all (only for Ningi). To improve navigation in Waze, I’ve added the address range 228–290 to Wallace Rd North, Beachmere. These updates will start appearing in new searches over the next week or so.

Something I’d like to confirm: from a few sources - and from your message - it seems the Beachmere addresses (228–290) might commonly be referred to as Wallace Rd even though the official road name is Wallace Rd North.

Are you able to confirm what the official postal address is for those properties?
For example, do the residents and services (mail, deliveries, emergency services) use Wallace Rd or Wallace Rd North?

This will help us decide whether Wallace Rd should be added as an alternate street name in Waze, to make sure searches match what people actually enter.

Thanks!

Hi Brandon,
Our part of the street was officially changed to Wallace Road North Beachmere by council around 10 years ago after residents partitioned to have the name changed due to many visitors and commuters getting confused and having to turn around when they realise there is no through road. Ambulances are a bit strange because I don’t know what they are using for their mapping, but we will get an ambulance hittin gthe end of the road here and quickly turning around every second month. Even recently following storms and major power outage in the area, the Energex crews did the same thing. That being said, they could be using their private mapping solution such as Google Maps or Apple Maps, which we know has some issues. and this is what we use for all official/formal address. There seems to be different variations of the street name on different databases (used by webiste for shipping for example) for some reason. It can sometimes it appear as Wallace Road N, Wallace Road North, Wallace Road Ningi etc).

Thanks
Oren

Thanks for confirming, I’ll go ahead and add the alternative name given it was previously the official name and may still catch people out.

Give it about a week for these changes to go through, but then Waze should be much better at helping people navigate the area. Afterwards you would need to clear your device cache to benefit from the updates: https://tinyurl.com/WazeClearPlaceCache

Your report has helped improve the map for the many other Wazers out there. Please keep on reporting map issues you encounter so we can keep the Waze map amazing! Have you considered becoming a map editor? More details here: http://bit.ly/WazeEditOz
