What's the policy for (apparently) invalid URs?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, or if the info is in a Wiki - I have looked!

What’s the UK policy for URs that don’t reflect an actual map problem? An example is this one:

https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=6&lat=51.61776&lon=-0.76206&layers=TBFTFFTTTTFTTTTTTTTFTTTTFT

(I hope it’s still open when this is read!). This is for ‘incorrect junction’, with no further info, and since this is local to me, I know that the map representation of the junction is correct and not (IMHO) misleading. The UR’s Waze route also matches its user route. Is it policy to mark known unnecessary URs as solved, or not identified, or just to leave them alone (as I’ve been doing) for some higher power to sort out?

Also, not on topic but out of interest: How does the promotion to next editor level work? I wouldn’t mind a move up to level 2 so as to look a bit less newbie-ish (I think I qualify now with over 1000 edits) - does this happen automatically at some time, or do I need to ask someone?

At the moment, I’d suggest leaving it alone for 5 days before closing it as Not Identified. Unfortunately, someone has already gone in and closed it, so you don’t have that option!

There are quite a few editors around who have Beta-access, and we’re trialling conversations, which allows us to send messages to the reporter and receive responses. This gives us a better chance at understanding what the issue is that the reporter was highlighting, so either advising them of what the likely issue is with their phone/settings, or actually fixing a problem.

I’m finding, at the moment, that approximately a quarter of reporters are responding. Of those that don’t, about a third are highlighting something that we can see without investigating too hard, and solve. The remainder haven’t provided enough information in the body of the UR, so those get closed as Not Identified after about 5 days of no response. Those that do respond seem to be split about 40:30:30 between:

  • feeding back useful supplementary information that enables it to be solved
  • reporting a problem with GPS positioning, which is a phone issue and nothing to do with Waze
  • admitting that they didn’t actually need to raise a UR because they’ve subsequently thought about it and realised there wasn’t an issue there.

I find that last statistic interesting. If it was applied across ALL URs, 60% of them aren’t reporting a problem with the map or the application. Have any other beta-editors have similar results from their conversations?

UR has not been closed.

Maybe they thought it should be a roundabout? Maybe they meant the previous junction with the M40, which is particularly complicated. I’ll ask them, and let you know…

Looking at that junction in the Livemap, there are no turn instructions for it - the driver just has to know to continue along the road.

The editor levels are explained in the Wiki.

I’ll be very interested to know what the reason for the UR was - thanks. I’m still learning. (There’s another UR open at present nearby, on the M40 Handy Cross junction that you mention, but I have no idea whether that’s a valid UR or not so I’m leaving it well alone.)

How does one find out what Waze’s turn instructions are from the Live Map? Or is this something that is not to be vouchsafed to mere mortals?

I looked harder in the wiki (which always seems to have a faint air of being slightly out of date, but that’s probably just me) and have now submitted a request to support to change my editing level. Thanks again.

The new Livemap is a bit trickier to get routes from, but basically you click on a road to get a popup menu. There you can set the origin and destination. There’s also a browser extension to do the same in the editor (see sig below)

Have a look for the United Kingdom section in the Wiki…

Hi,

You can get routes from the live map. Slick on a road for your start and select “origin” and then another road and select “destination” and you’ll get the route.

One does wonder what both the reports are for. Did the second one now want the A404 and if he did was it the instructions that were confusing?

As for the first, I too can see no obvious wrong junction, so it would beg the question was that the issue the user was trying to report?

Beta editor and some communication with the reporter would help here.

Des. . .

Some feedback from faitaru: “Coming from M40 it’s signed and drives like a roundabout. At the very least it needs some kind of instruction as the road deviates significantly going through.”

If it isn’t a roundabout going the other way, then we need introduce a ‘keep right’ or something on approach to the junction.

There’s a junction here https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat=51.25388&lon=-0.32308&env=row which seems to present a similar problem. This one hasn’t generated a UR for ages, so I think Moley_uk has got it right.

I’m not a beta editor but I can sometimes tell from a UR exactly why they’ve raised it, either because I know the junction or some detail of the traffic flows on the day they reported it, or they included enough information, or there’s some other factor, and I’d say yes, in about 60% of cases it’s not actually a problem.

Of the remaining 40%… for some of those, the map is already corrected but not yet live. This happens in particular where there has for example been a road closure or a junction change on a major route.
