Hi,
Wing in Rutland (as opposed to Wing in Buckinghamshire) is named as “Wing Rutland” in Waze. Request that this is changed to Wing (Rutland) as per Waze UK city naming guidelines.

Thanks, Kevin.
As this is only 24 segments, I’ve added Wing to 1 segment and you can change the rest to match
There isn’t a name clash as they are in different Waze counties.
If you don’t already use Color Highlights, now might be a good time. Once all are changed the old one should disappear after refresh of the cities, sometime, soon.
Hi Chris,
Can you change the name to Wing (Rutland) ? There are two Wings according to Gazatteer, one here and one in Buckinghamshire.
There are a couple of mistakes here. Unfortunately, they can’t now be properly rectified.
As Chris explained, the 2 Wings are in different counties. So there’s no need to put (Rutland) on the end of the name - that does not match the UK guidelines.
This is the mistake that can’t easily be rectified. Kevin - you can now change the city names on all the other segments to “Wing”. However the city “Wing Rutland” will continue to exist until there’s a city name cleanup - and this can sometimes take a long time. Until then, the old name will probably remain visible in WME and the app, even when there are no segments with that city name. Also, any inexperienced editor will be able to re-add that name again until it’s purged.
Chris - what you should have done is enabled the Cities layer and the Names option. You could then have changed the name of the existing city (this option is available to L4+ editors). Now that you’ve created Wing, that’s no longer possible, so we’ll just have to wait until Wing Rutland disappears. ![]()
Chris tries to be good, honest  I’ve tried many times to change city names within WME but have never seen the option, can you confirm with anyone the rank requirement.

Well it should be L4. If I select a city, I have a pencil icon next to the city name in the LH panel.
It’s possible that this may be confused with the ability of L4 editors to add new cities. I’ll try & find out.
Tim checked with HQ for me.
Creating new cities is a country-level setting, set to 4 for the UK - exactly as I thought.
Where I was confused is that this is not the same action/permission as changing the name of an existing city. That is a global setting and requires L5.
To be fair, creating cities is something that we do all the time. Since we control promotion past L3 in the UK, I’m quite happy that all our L4+ editors know what they’re doing and leave it up to them.
Changing city names is a far rarer event. After we got counties, pretty much all the city(county) names were corrected and there are only a couple of odd ones like this left over. Whilst it would be nice if L4 editors could also change names (and we will ask HQ if that’s possible), it’s an uncommon event, so requesting a change from a L5/6 editor isn’t a big ask. ![]()
I’d also note that it won’t be a case of senior editors “hogging points”. Changing a city name isn’t worth any edits at all. No edit is performed on any segment - it’s just a text change in a database.
Cheers for looking into this, though there is a minor flaw… I’m L5, is it possible there is an L5½ lurking in the system :?: Not wishing to moan about it, just trying to ensure we know where we stand ![]()
Oops
I’ll check further.
In the meantime I’ll change the city for all the streets in Wing. Sorry, misread the bit about the same county.
There seem to be a few of these in Rutland, e.g. Pilton and Lyndon just to the right of Wing…
Just to update the answer here (we discussed this further at the UK conference), it seems that you
need to be both level 5 and have Country-Wide Editing rights to be able to edit city names.
In the distant past, before self-management, promotion to L5 through HQ automatically came with CWE and the title “Country Manager”. Nowadays L5 doesn’t automatically give CWE and the title “Country Manager” is rather loosely-defined.
Anyway, if you have a city rename needed, there are plenty of UK Champs who can do this for you - just post a request. The Google form from HQ still exists somewhere and it may even still be monitored, but we’re going to get it done a lot quicker than they will.
