I’ve been looking at these 2 UR’s in Musselburgh North High Street. I’ve only had one reply back, but the reporter said the diversion was at night on a clear route. I’ve a look as to why they might have been routed away from the High Street, but can’t see anything except that a few of the road segments had no city name which I’ve now resolved.
Doing a route plan from east to west actually missed out most of the High Street all together, but I did notice that a lot of the streets have an elevation of -1.
Any and all assistance appreciated.
To start, let’s cross off a few things that won’t be causing a routing problem
-
city name, good to get it right, but irrelevant for routing.
-
the fact the the “minor highway” doesn’t have it’s A road number in it’s name; a violation of our standards but again irrelevant for routing. (From the east, “A199 - Bridge St” is right, but it should then be “A199 - North High St” followed by “A199 - Edinburgh Rd”; the “Musselburgh Rd” name stops much further west according to the OS. If you want to correct it, the WMEOpenData script is very helpful).

elevation doesn’t affect routing, but you can get some points for correcting it if you wish. Everything around here should be ground level, with the possible exception of the bridges which can be +1 if you like.
So why the diversion? I’ve been running through on livemap asking for routes from a pin dropped on the bridge in Bridge St to another dropped on “Musselburgh Rd” way beyond the end of the diversion. At most times, the only route offered is the straight and obvious one. However, when I asked for the route at 8am, Waze suddenly wanted to avoid the main road, and the diversion in the UR was one of the options, albeit not the first choice. Trying some more times at random, I found that the exact route given in the UR is first choice at 7pm; and then it’s back to the main road for the rest of the evening.
I suspect Waze doesn’t really have enough data yet, which is why the routes seem a bit erratic. But it certainly shows that the UR route is competitive for speed at busy times. Now apparently the UR was raised at a quiet time, when the stats show the main road as normally being quicker. However Waze traffic avoidance is based not just on long-term historic data, but also on the experiences of any Wazers passing through in the last few minutes. I think what has most likely happened here is that one Wazer drove the main road route a few minutes before the reporter, and experienced some sort of delay. This would have been enough to flip Waze over to another route for the next half hour or so. The delay may or may not have been “real”, possibly the other Waze stopped for five minutes to pick someone up from the pub - that could have triggered a “traffic jam”.
If you use the suggested responses to UR’s Wiki page, I think number 7 is probably relevant here.
Hope this helps, please post again if you have any more queries (or want help correcting the road names).

Thanks Ian, that was a great help.
I appreciate the time you took to look at it and the time spent on the reply.
I’ve installed the script and changed the street names and I think I’ve got most of the elevation differences.
I’ll post No7 on the UR.
