I am posting here on the advice of @Leigh-Staff after the UK/IE meetup. The UK community is requesting that two new turn instruction Voice Prompts be added to the WME and Waze apps. This has been previously requested on the Waze app UserVoice, but unfortunately, it seems to have got lost in the masses.
To clarify, we need the following Voice Prompts added to the following list:
- Yield and continue ( - Give Way and continue in UK English).
- Stop, then continue.
These two Voice Prompts should never be assigned to any turn by default. They would need to be assigned manually.
The TTS for these Voice Prompts need to be added to the Waze app and added to Transifex for localisation. Ideally, this would also include localised icons/signs for these instructions, but that’s not a priority.
Reasons: There is a safety issue at crossroad junctions, where a minor road crosses over a major road, and the driver on the minor road must yield to the major road to proceed straight. Waze, by default, gives no instructions that a driver may have to stop to give way/stop. Drivers are assuming, as no instruction is given, that they have priority at these junctions and continue regardless. The currently available “continue” instruction is not suitable on its own, as it implies priority and could actually exacerbate the issue.
Here is a video of an example junction showing the issues this is causes.
This is one of the most common reasons for URs in the UK. Drivers are expecting an instruction at such a junction, and report an “Incorrect Junction” report. Unfortunately, we have to explain to the Wazer that Waze doesn’t support such an instruction and advise them to observe road signs at all times.
I’m sure that this will also benefit other countries, not just the UK.
