How do we handle roads that are closed to the public while under construction? My thought is to label it as such and restrict inward connectivity. Naturally this would raise flags with validator though.
Without reinventing the wheel, I think the general adoption of some practices for the US should suffice for our purposes too. The more we tend to use ‘common’ usage methodologies, the easier it would be to maintain a worldwide standard for some of the practices affecting WME and the Waze clients.
Not sure what your thoughts on this is, but feel free to comment.
The US recently adopted a different method of naming, as mentioned in the Wiki under The US Road Naming section. You can have a look at Construction zones and closed roads. The previous method was to name it as “<Street Name> (CONST ZN)”, and to disconnect the relevant affected portions if required.
General info on handling road closures of various durations and categories are also in the Wiki at Road closures.
[EDIT] Just a note on turn restrictions. Routing can still ‘override’ the restrictions, as they simply imply a higher ‘penalty’ - i.e. if the total penalty for a route through there is lower than another alternative, or this route would the only option to get to a destination, the turn restrictions will be ignored. The only sure-fire way is to disconnect the relevant segments for long-term construction.

Thanks Carel, I see the USA wiki is pretty clear on the matter and agree that we should follow their standard.
As a side note, I received a message from berestovskyy that also clarified things:
For the constructions sites I travel past regularly I’ll apply the above - other than that we will have to rely on UR’s.

EDIT: Spelling
Kyle has a much better convention. I think it’s better to hide the street (if I understand correctly) than to disconnect it.
When construction is over, then renaming will be easier than connect and check restrictions.

The Waze routing engine works on a ‘penalty’ system, where turn restrictions gets a higher penalty if not allowed than other turns and road type transitions.
If the complete route, including the restriction penalty still has a lower average score than any other route, or if it’s deemed the only viable route, Waze would still attempt to route you through the restriction.
The only way to avoid invalid routing over a segment is to disconnect it from the rest of the infrastructure.
It’s also not advised to delete any segments like this, as historical speed info will be lost.
The best is to rename them to something that makes sense to existing and new editors.

This was announced today:
“We’ve updated our Map Editor! Road closures can now be added directly by veteran editors! New editors can request for closures to be added in our forums”.
Where do we get access now?
Hi Danie,
My understanding is that closures from the editor are limited to Level 5 editors only. If you’re aware of a closure that needs to be mapped feel free to PM me or post to the applicable South African sub forum.
