Speed Cameras

Even though I’m L1, I have been driving all over Montgomery county, Prince George’s County and Howard county and D.C. on a regular basis. I have added 2 speed camera’s and 1 Red Light AND Speed camera (this rare gem is a 2 pole deal that will get you for either/both going through the intersection on Red AND/OR catch you for speeding through at the same time-- yes both actions are wrong  , but the point is that it exists  ). I have had to add these via editing the map at least twice, and I have had to add it when I passed through on the road many times over. I don’t know what the holdup is with the adding/ editing, but despite being a L1 I think these types of edits should stick. Tell me where to send my 2 tickets in as proof, if that is the case. And no, I don’t know who to contact because even though I’m on a computer, I’m supposed to be working, not editing my commute to and from work. And I don’t care about points or anything; I just need to know where cameras are and various other changes to the road as I drive. Additionally I also added a new road pattern a long time ago as I drove it, and that did not remain on the map either. I would like some direct, concise tips or instructions to make an edit stick. How can I boost myself from L1 if simple edits/ adds will not remain?

Welcome to the Waze Forums!

You’ve come to the right place. Looks like you’ve done a good job of identifying where the speed cameras are in real-life, and even have added them via the Waze Map Editor, but you may have missed a few key steps.

  1. Placement: for stand-alone speed cameras (not mobile carts/cars), place them on the shoulder where they actually are. For red light cameras, place them on the stop line (white line) of the affected lanes.
  2. Shutter direction: Make sure the cameras are facing the correct direction. So if a camera takes a photo of west-bound traffic, make sure the “shutter” (red dot) of the camera is to the west.
  3. Add the speed limit to the camera
  4. Check the “approved” box.

It’s also recommended that you get a higher ranked editor to ‘touch’ the speed camera to lock it, so its not unintentionally moved/removed later.

If you’d like individualized help, post a PERMALINK of the camera location from the Waze map here, and we’ll help you out.

Once you add a speed camera in the WME, how long does it take to register in the app? I ask because there are 2 stationary cameras in my neighborhood, but they dig them up and move them every 4-6 weeks or so.

Just though I would check.

It depends on when the tile update occurs. We are often on a tile delay so it may be a couple of days. But definitely not 4-6 weeks.

Also the cameras can take a few tile updates to make it to the app users. So it could take up to a week for them to appear.
