Hey All,
TLDR: We will be migrating Wazeopedia to Waze Discuss. All Waze Communities’ knowledge and communication will be in one easy-to-use place. The Beta Phase should begin in Q1, 2025. Fill out this form to join the testing group.
—-------------------------------
We will migrate Wazeopedia to Waze Discuss to centralize all our communities’ communication and knowledge sharing in one place.
Waze Discuss: Unified Community Solution
- One-stop shop: Waze Discuss will become the central hub for all Waze communities, making it easier to find information, connect with others, and stay updated.
- Enhanced user experience: Waze Discuss offers a reliable and user-friendly platform with better search capabilities, addressing current technical issues in Wazeopedia.
Below you will find more information about the planned Migration:
- Content Migration:
- Content from Wazeopedia will be migrated to Waze Discuss, ensuring no data is lost.
- Redirects of articles will be supported.
- MediaWiki-Specific Actions: Some Wazeopedia articles have features tied to MediaWiki that won’t work in Discourse. Example ,the “Purge Cache” button on this page, will be non-functional after migration)
- Wazeopedia Structure: A three-level structure similar to the editors forum will be used.
- Search in Discuss will be improved to prioritize Wazeopedia content.
- Wazeopedia Display & Authorship:
- Articles will have a country community bot (user) with a logo per country (see the below image from USA Wazeopedia)
- After the migration, when a user edits an article, their name will appear in the edit history.
- Full edit history will not be transferred.
- User data will not be migrated.
- We recommend taking a snapshot of any historical data you may need before the transition.
- Commons Category: will not be migrated to Waze Discuss. Media will be stored in each post individually.
- Handling Tables:
- Imported Tables: Existing tables from Wazeopedia will be imported in HTML format.
- Embed Tables: Embedding iframes in Discourse is possible
- New Tables in Discourse: When creating new tables in Waze Discuss, you can use either Markdown or HTML.
- The Waze Glossary needs some reformatting due to character limits in Discuss.
Templates:
Articles from Wazeopedia utilizing MediaWiki templates will be migrated to Waze Discuss as text without the templates’ capabilities.
There will be 2 new templates available:
- wzTemplates capabilities:
- wzTemplate (Basic): A standard Discuss post with existing capabilities (tagging, images, links, embedding), primarily for static content.
- wzTemplate (Nested): Can reference another post containing a wzTemplate, enabling nesting.
- wzTemplates will be available on all Discuss forums.
Discuss Templates will not support the following MediaWiki Features:
- Programming language features (if-else, switch blocks).
- Example: “Notice” template with switch block.
- Parameter passing/acceptance during rendering.
- Example: “Red Template” with parameter acceptance.
- Awareness of the templating post.
Customize layout with Waze Boxes
- We’ll have more flexible layouts for text and images. You can refer to our beta post for box layout
See below mockups, still a work in progress:

Waze boxes: Add your content in different ways to articles
Next Steps:
- We’re finalizing the design and user experience.
- A beta version will be available for testing and feedback in Q1, 2025.
- Wazeopedia will be read-only for a while after the move so you can compare and check everything.
- If you wish to take part in the testing phase, please fill out this form.
We understand this transition will require adjustment, and we are committed to making it as smooth as possible. We’ll be gathering feedback, and collaborating with the community every step of the way.
I’m here for any questions you may have.
