More odd routing

Hi,

I’ve noticed a few recent posts regarding odd routing. I’ve just responded to a UR which has a similar issue.

When routing from North Down to Marden Rd, instead of going via the direct route (turn right at the junction), it turns you left, then right onto Thatcher Rd, right and along the parallel loop road (also named Marden Rd) before sending you off in the right direction.

There are no restrictions or closures on the road.
All turns are correctly enabled.
There is nothing on roadworks.org.

The added twist, it routes correctly most times of day Thursday, Friday & Saturday!
It also routes correctly 100% of the time when the route type is set to shortest.

If I’m understanding WME Route Speeds correctly, it appears to be related to the time it takes to turn right from North Down into Marden Rd (~72s Sun-Wed compared to ~16s Thur-Sat).

One potential solution is to turn the parallel road into a parking road, but I feel that would be cheating.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I think that there are two ways of doing this . . .

The ‘soft’ option would be for you, as, if not a local, then someone who drives this route regularly, to resolutely ignore Waze and make the right turn out of North Down. Eventually, Waze may take the hint that this is a preferred route.

The ‘hard’ option would be, as you say, to reduce the status of that segment of Marden Rd, which exists solely to serve the properties built along it, to a ‘Parking Lot Road’, which makes it less likely to be used in through routings.

I don’t think it’s ‘cheating’ (mainly because I’ve used it a couple of times myself), but this cut-through is different from most in that it doesn’t start and finish on the main Marden Rd. I don’t think that matters.

To assuage your conscience, you could add the house numbers to the reduced status road, so any Wazer wanting to reach a specific address would end up right outside it - with luck, you’ll be able to use GSV . . .

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your thoughts and feedback, and confirmation that I’m barking up the right tree!

Your response has just prompted me to check it again and, although it has been impossible to replicate the problem for the last week, it has just shown as playing up again on a Wednesday morning at 8am.

I’ve just gone for the ‘hard’ option and changed the road type to PLR, hopefully that’ll fix the problem…

Oh, great idea about my conscience, I do feel a little bit less guilty now that I’ve added the street numbers too.

Cheers,

Dave
