Regional Coordinator

This page covers the role of the Regional Coordinator in the United States and includes a table of the current members.

Overview

The Regional Coordinator (RC) is a Coordinator in a country too large for one or two coordinators to cover everything. The country is divided into regions, and one or more regional coordinators are assigned to each region. In the case of two or more Regional Coordinators, one editor shall retain the role of Regional Coordinator while the others retain Assistant Regional Coordinator (ARC). The term (A)RC is commonly used to refer to RCs and ARCs together. There is no limit to how many Coordinators a region may have, but a reasonable effort should be made to have only what the region needs. If a Coordinator becomes inactive in their duties, they should step down or be removed from the role.

Currently, only the USA has Regional Coordinators. All other countries will have one or two Coordinators.

Regional Coordinator Responsibilities:

Regional Coordinators have the same role and responsibilities as Country Coordinators.

They are experts who coordinate with the local community, other regional coordinators, country coordinators, and the Waze Team as regional community ambassadors—usually Global Champs.

A Regional Coordinator’s main responsibilities:

  • Participating in both the global and local Champs’ groups and being in direct contact with the relevant Waze community managers and the other Regional Coordinators
  • Advise about the urgency and the severity of any reported issue
    • Initiate any remedial actions necessary within the community or through Waze staff.
  • Be aware of the company news, product announcements, new versions, etc.
  • Assist with social media activities in the region/country
  • Take part in the setup of local and regional editor meetups
  • Coordinate, process, and submit various promotions and AM requests for editors within their region
  • Coordinate creation and implementation of regional editing guidance based on national guidance and local needs
  • Directly communicate with SM(s) and ARC(s) in their region

Process for selecting new RC candidates:

When there is a need for an RC in a region, the current group of US (A)RCs should discuss and reach out to champs within the region to be considered for the role.

If an active, qualified, and willing ARC, GC or LC exists in the region, the RC role will go to that interested Champ in that region first. If the region produces multiple acceptable candidates who are active, willing, and able to take on the RC role, the active US Champs will express their choice in the forums. Active US Champs must show reason(s) why a particular candidate is a better choice over another. This will allow the (A)RC group to make a better choice for the region. Generally, a GC would be preferred over an LC for the RC role.

If the region cannot produce a US Champ who resides within that region, the search can be expanded to nearby regions US Champs. This can be done in the forum or the current communication platform of the community (aka Discord).

Once a candidate is selected, the Champ who is nominating the candidate must consult with the current US Staff Community Manager (SCM) prior to posting the nomination. Due to the abilities Coordinators have, Coordinators must be approved by Waze staff. Typically, Coordinators are picked by staff; however, the US is unique in having multiple Coordinators throughout the US in charge of specific regions.

In the case of a current (A)RC changing regions, this also must be approved by Waze staff before handing over that responsibility. There are various backend changes that need to occur before responsibility can be handed over.

Promotion Process:

A forum post must be made in the US Champ Forum, with a feedback period of seven days. There should be no voting on this post. Either a current (A)RC (if one exists) or the GC’s or LC’s who are interested in taking on the role (if there is no current (A)RC) may make the post. Priority goes to a qualified candidate local to the region.

The “discussion” must stay open for seven days.

If there are no objections at the completion of this period, the nomination is approved.

Any objections must go through a thorough analysis/discussion in the US Champ forum, with each objection addressed and settled by majority agreement. Should this not be accomplished in the time period, the nomination would move to a vote following the same format outlined in the Promotion Process for US LC in a seven day period on that nominee. Failure to pass would require a new RC nomination.

The nominee will have full access to comments in the US Champ forum to defend themselves from any objection.

If an outside the region GC or LC takes the RC role somewhere, the intent would be to eventually bring up an editor who lives in the region to champ, then take over the RC role.

Regional Coordinator Eligibility

Generally, a new RC should have at least six months of experience as an ARC or at least one year of experience as a US Champ. An RC should also not have or retain the Emeritus Champ role, when being considered for an RC position. These are meant to be guidelines, and special circumstances may merit some variation on a case by case basis. Nevertheless, every RC and ARC must be a US Champ.

While not an eligibility condition, the number of (A)RCs a region already has should be taken into consideration. There is no limit to the number per region; however, a reasonable effort should be made to only have the number needed for the region to function. If there are one or more (A)RCs who are not active, they should consider stepping down until they are able to perform the duties entailed as RC.

Removal Process

If two or more of the following are applicable, the process for removing an RC should begin:

  • No posts in the forum/Discord for 60+ days
  • Holds the status of Emeritus Champ
  • Promotion requests that have not been responded to for more than 60+ days
  • Attempts to contact the RC do not yield any response, or if they do, it is to resign as RC
  • Has failed to make frequent contributions in any of the available communication channels to specifically include the Champ’s home region Discord and/or forum (provided there is no disclosed planned or known reason for the inactivity and is for a reasonable amount of time)
    • If there is a known or planned hiatus for more than six months, the RC should step down from the role and let another Champ take on the responsibilities. While circumstances may vary, the general principle is to maintain active leadership.

If the process for RC removal has begun, the RC may also be considered for eligibility to the Emeritus Champ group.

Should an RC voluntarily step down or be removed, the following action items should occur:

  • A post should be made in the US Champ forum either by the RC in question or another (A)RC indicating the change
  • An announcement should be made to the affected region’s editors in the region’s main communication platform
  • Removal from the various RC groups (Google, Discord, Forum, wiki etc.)
  • If there is no active ARC for the region to act as temporary RC, another RC should be designated as a temporary RC for the region to handle any urgent requests or concerns
    • This temporary RC can be one or multiple RCs but should only be considered as a short term solution
  • The current US SCM must be alerted to the change in leadership to remove any backend permissions
  • The process for selecting a new RC should begin
